Nintendo introduces paid DLC, lets you complete the games you completed

Did you get a Nintendo shaped bundle of joy for Christmas? Completed the games already? Fear not, as from March Kyoto's gaming veterans will be launching paid downloadable game content for its 3D handheld. The first title to get the goodies will be Fire Emblem, and as yet, there's no clues about what treats you'll get for the reported "several hundred yen" you'll be asked to stump up. Nintendo, however, is understandably keen to stimulate interest in its 3D titles, and more importantly, claw back some of that mobile gaming market-share. With hints of downloadable add-ons coming to the Wii-U also, and Mr. Iwata's previous commitment to deliver the goods, it clearly thinks this is the way to go -- let's just hope all the kinks have been ironed out come release day.

Britain's Prince Philip leaves hospital (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Prince Philip returned to the royal family's country estate Tuesday, after a spell in the hospital undergoing treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's 90-year-old husband, spent four nights in the hospital recovering from a successful coronary stent procedure. He was taken to Papworth, a specialist heart hospital in Cambridge, on Friday after complaining of chest pains.

It was the most serious health scare suffered by Philip, who is known to be active and robust. He has continued to appear at many engagements, most recently taking a 10-day tour of Australia with the queen.

For the first time in years he was forced to miss the royal family's traditional Christmas festivities, which include attending a morning church service, viewing the queen's annual Christmas broadcast together, and a shooting party on Boxing Day.

Philip did not speak to reporters as he was driven away from the hospital in a Range Rover Tuesday morning, though he smiled and waved to those gathered to film his departure.

"He is very much looking forward to rejoining his family," a Buckingham Palace statement said, adding that he also thanked the hospital staff for their care.

Philip will now return to Sandringham, the queen's huge private estate in rural Norfolk where the royal family retreats for the holiday season every year.

It is not yet clear if Philip's heart problem will cause a reduction in his plans to travel with the queen next year to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. He is scheduled to make a series of trips to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to help her mark her 60th year on the throne.

Now that Philip has been found to have coronary artery blockages, he is likely to be treated with several medications that are routinely prescribed for heart patients. The goal is to prevent future coronary artery blockages and a possible heart attack.

In most cases these medicines would include a daily dosage of aspirin to thin the blood, a statin to lower cholesterol, and possibly a beta-blocker and a separate medicine to control his blood pressure. Philip would also be expected to have his heart function tested every six months or so to check for any changes.

Philip had already announced when he turned 90 that he intended to slow down his extremely active schedule. The Diamond Jubilee plans reflected this desire, with the queen deciding to send her children and grandchildren on grueling overseas trips to Commonwealth countries while she and her husband make less demanding trips throughout the United Kingdom.

Intel Thunderbolt may reach Windows in April with Apple help

Thunderbolt said ready to go for April

Intel's Thunderbolt for Windows PCs could arrive in April, purported insiders stated Monday night. Apple is reportedly helping Intel adopt the standard the two co-created, Digitimes heard. PC builders ASUS and Sony, as well as mainboard builders ASRock and Gigabyte, are expected to be part of the first wave.

Apple is believed to have achieved Intel's hoped-for goal of building an ecosystem of demand and accessories. The expansion would help overcome some of the trepidation over the standard, where a Thunderbolt controller chip is believed to cost over $20 where USB 3.0 is much cheaper.

Thunderbolt was developed partly at Apple's prompting to develop a very high-speed yet small cable that could also merge the display signal. Although few devices exist that use it, it has given Apple an advantage where even a MacBook Air can use a multi-disk external RAID drive as quickly as it could if it were an internal drive. USB 3.0 is less expensive but has half the effective bandwidth and isn't officially meant to drive more than data, although it can be used for video.

An April target may be a clue as to when the first Ivy Bridge chips are in the market in earnest. Intel rarely launches chipsets and their processors separately.

Packers lead Bears 28-10 after third quarter (AP)

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, Clay Matthews made a critical interception to stop a drive, and the Green Bay Packers led the rival Chicago Bears 28-10 after three quarters on Sunday night.

With the Packers nursing a four-point lead, and the Lambeau Field crowd nervously quiet early in the third quarter, Rodgers found Jordy Nelson for a 55-yard touchdown pass to give the Packers a 21-10 lead.

Chicago came into Sunday on a four-game losing streak and beset by injuries. But the Bears were able to stay in the game with solid defense and tough running by third-string running back Kahlil Bell, who had 89 yards on 14 carries in the first half.

With the Bears trailing 14-3 at halftime, quarterback Josh McCown found Earl Bennett wide open for a 49-yard gain to set up first-and-goal on the 1. Bell fumbled just short of the goal line on the next play but offensive lineman Edwin Williams recovered the ball for a touchdown, and the Bears cut the lead to 14-10.

Rodgers answered by dropping deep and throwing a rainbow pass to Nelson, who blew past Bears safety Major Wright and hauled in the ball for the long touchdown.

Rodgers then showed his running ability on the Packers' next possession, juking his way between Bears linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs on a scramble. Rodgers finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown to James Jones, giving the Packers a commanding 28-10 lead.

Packers safety Charlie Peprah came up with an interception, and the Packers were driving again at the end of the third quarter.

Rodgers started the game quickly, driving the Packers 80 yards on their first possession and finishing with a 2-yard touchdown to Jermichael Finley.

Finley had three touchdown catches in the Packers' 27-17 victory at Chicago on Sept. 25, but was coming off a rough outing in Green Bay's loss at Kansas City a week ago.

Playing with a patchwork offensive line because of injuries, the Packers used their no-huddle offense and bootlegs by Rodgers to keep the Bears' pass rush off balance early.

The Bears responded with a run-heavy drive featuring Bell, who started with Matt Forte and Marion Barber out injured. Chicago drove into Green Bay territory, but then committed back-to-back penalties. Robbie Gould missed a 49-yard field goal wide right.

The Packers' offense slowed down from there, and some more hard runs by Bell had the Bears threatening to score again early in the second quarter. Matthews picked McCown's pass out of the air for an interception on a second-and-5 play at the Green Bay 22, ending the drive.

Chicago then put together another drive behind the running of Bell and Armando Allen, and Gould hit a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 with 1:56 left in the half.

The Packers then shook off their offensive struggles in the two-minute drill as Rodgers threw a 32-yard pass to Jones, a 17-yard pass to Nelson and an 11-yard pass to set up the short touchdown to Jones.

Green Bay came into Sunday night's game playing for the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. The Packers could clinch home-field advantage by beating Chicago on Sunday night or by beating Detroit in next Sunday's regular season finale at Lambeau Field, or if San Francisco loses at St. Louis next week.

The Packers were without three of their top four tackles on the offensive line.

Chad Clifton returned to practice this week after sitting out since October because of hamstring and back injuries, but isn't ready to play. Bryan Bulaga was inactive Sunday because of a left knee sprain, and backup Derek Sherrod is out for the season with a broken right leg.

Green Bay also was missing wide receiver Greg Jennings, because of a sprained left knee, and defensive lineman Ryan Pickett because of a concussion.

The Bears have lost four straight games since losing quarterback Jay Cutler to a broken right thumb in a Nov. 20 victory over San Diego. Chicago was 7-3 after that win, but came into Sunday's game barely hanging onto a chance to make the playoffs.

Chicago would be eliminated with a loss Sunday night.

The Bears started McCown on Sunday after backup Caleb Hanie struggled to fill in for Cutler. McCown's most recent start came with the Oakland Raiders on Dec. 23, 2007. He was completely out of the NFL last season.

To make matters worse for the Bears' offense, Barber was inactive because of a calf injury and was listed as doubtful going into the game. Chicago already was without Forte, who missed his third straight game because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Chicago did have Devin Hester, who was active despite an ankle injury.

The Packers were trying for their fourth win over the Bears in 2011. Green Bay beat Chicago in the 2010 regular-season finale, the NFC Championship game, and at Soldier Field on Sept. 25.

Army wants Zardari out but not a coup: Military sources

Milita?ry source?s say coup would be unpopu?lar, not just with govern?ment and opposi?tion but most Pakist?anis too.

Military sources say coup would be unpopular, not just with government and opposition but most Pakistanis too. PHOTO: AFP/ FILE

ISLAMABAD:?Pakistan?s powerful army is fed up with President Asif Ali Zardari and wants him out of office, but through legal means and without a repeat of the coups that are a hallmark of the country?s 64 years of independence, military sources said.?????????

Tensions are rising between Pakistan?s civilian leaders and its generals over a memo that accused the army of plotting a coup after the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May.

?Who isn?t fed up with Zardari? It?s not just the opposition and the man on the street but people within the government too,? said one military source who asked not to be named.

?But there has to be a proper way. No action is being planned by the army. Even if we tried, it would be very unpopular and not just with the government and the opposition but most Pakistanis too.?

The Pakistani military spokesman declined comment.

General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani has pledged to keep the military out of Pakistani politics since taking over as army chief in 2007.

Any coup ? Pakistan has had three since independence in 1947 ? could further tarnish the military?s public image which has already taken a battering after the Bin Laden operation, widely seen in Pakistan as a violation of sovereignty.

But the army remains the arbiter of power and analysts say it has plenty of ways to pressure Zardari to step down, especially if a link is established between him and the memo, which sought the Pentagon?s help in averting a feared coup.

Businessman Mansoor Ijaz, writing in a column in the Financial Times on October 10, said a senior Pakistani diplomat had asked that a memo be delivered to the Pentagon with a plea for US help to stave off a military coup in the days after the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May.

Ijaz later identified the diplomat as Pakistan?s ambassador to Washington Husain Haqqani who denied involvement but resigned over the controversy. No evidence has emerged that the military was plotting a coup and the Pentagon at the time dismissed the memo as not credible.

Friction between Pakistan?s civilian government and military have bedevilled the nuclear-armed South Asian country for almost its entire existence, with the military ruling for more than half its 64-year history after a series of coups.

In the past, the army has asked Pakistani civilian leaders to resign and influenced judicial proceedings against them.

Haqqani?s resignation was seen by many analysts as further weakening the civilian government, which is already beset by allegations of corruption and incompetence in the face of many challenges, including a weak economy and a Taliban insurgency.

Memogate????????

Zardari returned to Pakistan this week from medical treatment in Dubai that raised speculation he would resign under pressure from the military over what has been dubbed ?Memogate?.

Although his position is largely ceremonial, he wields considerable influence as leader of the ruling party and his forced departure would be a humiliation for the civilian leadership and could throw the country into turmoil.

One of the military sources suggested that no direct action would be needed against the government because it had already made so many mistakes.

?If the government is digging its own grave, we are not going to look for spades,? the source said.

The military has reasserted itself after a November 26 Nato cross-border air attack killed 24 Pakistani soldiers and the memo has also given it political ammunition.

In a statement submitted to the Supreme Court, which is looking into a petition demanding an inquiry into who may have been behind the memo, Kayani said it was a serious matter which required an investigation.

?We want anyone involved, be they in government or elsewhere, to be punished. But it is not for us to do anything. If the army moves to do anything it would have national as well as international repercussions,? said another military source.

?So that is not likely. Anything that has to be done has to be done by the Supreme Court.?

Officials from Zardari?s ruling party have played down friction with the military and say they don?t fear a coup.

But they fear that some judges in the increasingly aggressive Supreme Court dislike Zardari and could move against him.

?I am not bothered about the army. I think they are acting very sensibly and would not derail the system at the moment,? a senior ruling party leader told Reuters.

?The worry probably would be what the Supreme Court does. They look in a mood to manipulate things.?

The government?s anxiety over Memogate was highlighted in comments made by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Thursday.

?Let me make clear to you today that there are intrigues, conspiracies afoot to pack up the elected government,? he said in a speech at the National Art Gallery.

Rambus, Broadcom sign licensing deal, agree to share toys

It never hurts to stop arguing, hug it out and agree on a patent licensing deal. Today, Rambus -- which has a history of litigating against chip makers it feels are have violated its intellectual property rights and filed a complaint against Broadcom to the International Trade Commission in 2010 -- signed a licensing deal that resolved previous claims for Broadcom's technology. In the statement, Rambus said it will license its patent for integrated circuits used in chips made by Broadcom. The company did not disclose any financial details related to the deal, or which technology would be part of the agreement, though Broadcom is typically renowned for its wireless networking chips which are often found in WiFi, Bluetooth and cellular-capable devices. In other news, Rambus and Broadcom have added each other as Xbox Live friends and gotten to level 36 in Modern Warfare 3 co-op gameplay.

Moody's cuts Slovenia's credit rating one notch to A1 (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Moody's Investors Service on Thursday cut the sovereign foreign currency credit rating for Slovenia one notch to A1 from Aa3, citing increasing pressure on the government's balance sheet that could arise from a potential need to further support the nation's banking system.

The outlook for the credit rating is negative, Moody's said in a statement. Slovenia is rated one notch higher, at AA-minus, by both Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings.

Moody's also said the downward pressure on the rating stems from a deterioration in government funding conditions due to the ongoing euro zone credit crisis.

Fitch Ratings last week said it had put Slovenia on watch for a possible downgrade, and expects to complete that review by the end of January.

Slovenia was the fastest growing euro zone member in 2007 but was badly hit by the 2008-2009 global crisis due to its dependency on exports. The economy shrank by 8 percent in 2009.

After a year of recovery, Slovenia's economy contracted by 0.5 percent in the third quarter of 2011 signaling another recession might be coming.

Beltran, Cardinals agree to 2-year contract (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Carlos Beltran and the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a two-year contract pending results of a physical, fortifying the team's lineup following the departure of Albert Pujols.

The team disclosed the move Thursday night and said it expects to make a formal announcement shortly after the holidays.

KMOX, the Cardinals' flagship radio station, reported the deal is for $26 million over two years ? the same figure cited by a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because financial details of the agreement were not announced by the team.

The 34-year-old Beltran batted .300 with 22 home runs, 84 RBIs and a .385 on-base percentage for the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants this year. He likely will be the opening-day right fielder for the Cardinals next season. Lance Berkman is expected to move to first base, taking Pujols' spot.

Allen Craig, coming off an impressive postseason, gives the Cardinals another strong outfield option but will miss at least the first month while recovering from knee surgery.

A six-time All-Star, Beltran began his career with the cross-state Royals in 1998, three years after Kansas City drafted him in the second round. The switch-hitter has a .283 career batting average with 302 home runs and 1,146 RBIs.

"Beltran is a proven outfielder who obviously has been a tough opponent against the Cardinals for many years," St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. "It is going to be nice to have his bat and competitive nature working for us instead of on the other side of the field for the next couple of years."

Beltran faced the Cardinals in a pair of NL championship series, in 2004 with Houston and 2006 with the Mets. St. Louis won both series despite several big hits by Beltran.

With a chance to put the Mets in the World Series, however, he struck out looking to end Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS against Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright.

Moynihan leaving UWM to coach Northwestern

Mike Moynihan said he wasn't looking for a new job.

But Northwestern University officials were actively seeking a new coach for their women's soccer program, and they found their man.

Moynihan, who led the UW-Milwaukee women's team to nine NCAA tournament appearances in 15 seasons, was named Northwestern's coach Wednesday.

He will be asked to reinvigorate a Wildcats team that finished 2-16-1, including 1-9-1 in Big Ten play. Northwestern's only victories came against Loyola and Michigan.

"I wasn't necessarily looking, but I thought it would be worth checking out," Moynihan said Wednesday after both schools announced the move. "From there it went pretty quickly.

"They definitely have a vision for the program being among the elite programs in the country. It's lofty, but I think it's possible."

A source said Moynihan received a multiyear deal after posting a 193-84-38 record with the Panthers.

UWM officials confirmed that associate head coach David Nikolic would join Moynihan at Northwestern. Nikolic was part of the Panthers program for the past 18 years.

"David and I have been together a long time and we've grown together, professionally and personally," Moynihan said. "A big part of it is it's a new challenge."

Moynihan said he told his UWM players of his departure in a Monday afternoon meeting that lasted about an hour and a half.

It was a daunting task for Moynihan, who was with the Panthers program for 19 years after first serving as an assistant coach under his sister, Susan. And the Panthers recently renamed their field the Laura Moynihan Field at Engelmann Stadium in honor of Moynihan's mother, who also served as UWM's head coach.

"It's been brutal," Moynihan said of leaving his UWM players. "Separation is incredibly difficult. I can't say enough about the maturity our players have shown.

"It (the meeting) was continual tears; it was emotional for everybody. I knew what I had to say, but it was very difficult."

Moynihan leaves after leading UWM to a 19-3 record and a second-round appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Panthers broke through to get their first NCAA tourney win, a 3-0 decision over Illinois State at Engelmann.

Senior forward Sarah Hagen finished second nationally among Division I players with 26 goals and 61 points and was named to Soccer America's MVP first team. The Panthers finished ranked No. 23 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

"It was a fantastic year, a fantastic senior group," Moynihan said. "I know they will continue on very strong."

UWM won the last 12 Horizon League regular-season titles and posted a 77-4-3 record during that span. The Panthers also won eight league tournament titles under Moynihan.

The new Northwestern coach is no stranger to the Big Ten after aggressively scheduling Big Ten schools during his time at UWM. Moynihan said the Panthers played every school except Penn State.

"It will be a whole different landscape for recruiting," Moynihan said of Northwestern. "It's a school with not just a national reputation but a world reputation.

"I was honored they showed the interest they did, and the energy they showed for women's soccer was incredible."

Moynihan said his official starting date at Northwestern will be Monday.

UWM director of athletics Rick Costello said a national search will begin immediately for Moynihan's replacement.

U.N. council members line up to criticize Israel (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? Most members of the U.N. Security Council voiced deep concerns on Tuesday about the impasse in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and criticized Israel for pressing ahead with the construction of new settlements.

Council members were reacting to a briefing by U.N. assistant secretary-general for political affairs, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, who told them the search for peace "remained elusive in a context of tensions on the ground, deep mistrust between the parties and volatile regional dynamics."

Statements criticizing Israel were made on behalf of at least nine of the 15 council members.

Representatives of Britain, France, Germany and Portugal said Fernandez-Taranco's briefing made clear to the council that Israeli settlement activity was undermining attempts to restart stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.

"One of the themes that emerged was the severely damaging effect that increased settlement construction and settler violence is having on the ground and on the prospects of a return to negotiations," the four European Union council members said in a joint statement.

"Israel's continuing announcements to accelerate the construction of settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, send a devastating message," said the statement, which was read to reporters by British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.

The Europeans called for an immediate halt to Israeli settlement activity, adding they hoped the government would follow through on promises to bring settlers guilty of violence to justice.

Without explicitly naming the United States, Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin accused Washington of turning a blind eye to the way efforts to restart the peace process have come to nothing.

"There is one delegation which would not want to hear anything about it, any kind of a statement, which believes that somehow things will sort of settle themselves somehow miraculously out of their own," Churkin said.

ISRAEL BLAMES PALESTINIANS

The United States has veto powers on the Security Council, which it has exercised repeatedly for decades to prevent the council from condemning Israel.

A U.S. spokesman said "the only way to resolve the outstanding issues between Israelis and Palestinians is through serious and substantive direct negotiations."

South African Ambassador Baso Sangqu read a statement on behalf of the 120-nation bloc of non-aligned countries that generally reiterated the European statement, describing settlement activities as "illegal" and "the main impediment to the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti echoed Sangqu's words in a statement she read on behalf of Brazil, India and South Africa. Lebanon's U.N. envoy Nawaf Salam made similar remarks.

Karean Peretz, spokeswoman for Israeli's U.N. mission, reacted by saying "the main obstacle to peace has been, and remains, the Palestinians' claim to the so-called right of return and its refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state."

Churkin, the Russian envoy, said the series of addresses to the media on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was a "completely new development."

Palestinian observer Riyad Mansour told reporters that "one powerful member of the Security Council" - the United States - was preventing it from dealing with the settlements issue and other problems related to the Middle East peace process.

In September, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted an application for full membership in the United Nations, which the Security Council would have to approve for it to go to the General Assembly for a vote.

Churkin said the council was prepared to act on the Palestinian application as soon as a draft resolution is submitted that could be voted on. So far, no country has submitted one, which Churkin suggested was probably due to the fact that Washington would strike it down.

In February, the U.S. delegation vetoed a council resolution condemning Israeli settlements in territories the Palestinians hope to include in any future peace settlement. The United States was the only council member to vote against it.

Apple's 'huge' smartphone patent victory: 3 consequences (The Week)

New York ? The tech giant wins its "data tapping" lawsuit, and now, some Android users will no longer be able to dial phone numbers by just tapping them

This week, Apple won a "huge"?battle in the smartphone patent war. The United States International Trade Commission ruled that a common smartphone feature called "data tapping," which allows a user to dial a phone number simply by tapping it in an email, text, or website, was protected under an Apple patent. Squaring off against Apple was HTC, a Taiwan-based Android phone manufacturer. (Many smartphones, Android included, have imitated Apple's "data tapping" technology.) While the feature in question may seem small, the case could have far-reaching consequences for Apple, Google, and all Android phones. Here, three possible consequences:

1. It will kill innovation
"Apple's smartphone patent win is our loss," says Matthew Yglesias at Slate. There are still billions of people all over the world who don't have a smartphone, and there's ample opportunity for new companies to provide them with new gadgets and more choices ? unless giants like Apple monopolize the market with this sort of litigation. "In the world we're heading for, any innovative sector will have a very brief wild west phase until a handful of companies get rich enough to lawyer up and start suing everyone, and then the market closes down."

SEE MORE: Motorola's Droid RAZR: 'The best Android' phone yet?

?

2. HTC will soldier on
This is actually just a "limited" legal victory for Apple, given that it originally alleged that HTC had violated 10 patents, says Roger Cheng at CNET. True, your HTC phone is probably in violation of Apple's patent, and will likely require a software upgrade. That may mean that HTC users will have to type in phone numbers themselves in the future. But that's hardly the end of the world ? and certainly won't be the end of HTC.

3. Apple will launch a new war on Google's Android
Apple might use this win "to launch complaints against any or all other manufacturers of Android based smartphones running any or all versions of Android," says Rik Myslewski at The Register. That "could cause a world of hurt for the U.S. Android ecosystem." Indeed, if Apple can "chip away at Android's usability,"?says Darreel Ehterington at GigaOm, the company could seriously hinder Android's ability to win new customers.

Sacramento void Hayes deal after he fails medical (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Sacramento Kings cancelled their four-year contract with free agent Chuck Hayes on Monday after he failed a physical.

Kings president Geoff Petrie said the $21.3 million deal had been voided because of medical reasons.

"This morning, in one of the most heartbreaking moments of my professional or personal life, Chuck Hayes was notified that he failed his physical exam with the Sacramento Kings," Petrie said in a statement.

"Subsequent to that, the contract signed on December 9th has been voided. At Chuck's request, we will have no further comment at this time."

The Kings last week revealed that a recent heart exam on Hayes had shown an abnormality but did not provide any more details.

Before becoming a free agent, the 28-year-old had spent the past six seasons playing for the Houston Rockets. Last season, he averaged 7.9 points and 8.1 rebounds a game.

Ryan, Abraham lead Falcons to 41-14 rout of Jags (AP)

ATLANTA ? Ho hum, another winning season for the Atlanta Falcons.

That's not such a big deal anymore.

This team has much higher goals.

Putting together their most complete effort of the season, the Falcons clinched a fourth straight winning record with a 41-14 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. Matt Ryan had another big game, throwing three touchdown passes in less than three quarters of work, and John Abraham terrorized rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert with 3 1/2 sacks.

Atlanta (9-5) strengthened its hold on an NFC wild card, shrugging off the immediate accomplishment of another above-.500 finish.

"Our expectations are much higher than winning seasons," coach Mike Smith said. "I'm glad we've been able to accomplish that as an organization and a football team. But believe me, it's not one of those expectations we really want to talk about. If we're where we think we are as an organization and a football team, that's expected each and every year."

It wasn't so long ago that nine wins was a big deal. The Falcons went through the first 42 years of their existence without so much as back-to-back winning seasons. All that changed when Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff took over in 2008.

Since then, Atlanta has been to the playoff two times and is closing in on a third appearance.

"I can't speak to the people who came before, but I know since Thomas and I had the opportunity to be here, we've just kind of put our heads down and gone to work," Smith said. "When you do that, good things usually happen. We are not finished, believe me. Our expectations and internal goals are much higher than having a winning football season."

This one was over by halftime. Atlanta led 27-0 when the teams trotted to the locker room, Gabbert and the shellshocked Jaguars (4-10) saddled with a net passing total of minus-1 yard.

Atlanta stretched out its lead to 41-0 before Jacksonville scored on a blocked punt. Going back to the previous week, when the Falcons overcame a 16-point halftime deficit at Carolina, they ripped off 65 points in a row over five quarters.

Now that's more like it from a team that was projected as a Super Bowl contender but had not quite lived up to expectations.

"I feel like we've hit our stride," said Roddy White, who had 10 catches for 135 yards and became just the eighth receiver in NFL history with 80 receptions and 1,000 yards in five straight seasons.

Gabbert had one of his worst games in a miserable rookie season, coughing up the ball twice on hits by Abraham. Both fumbles led to Atlanta scores, with defensive tackle Corey Peters scooping up the second one and trotting to the end zone early in the third quarter for a touchdown that ended any thought of the Jaguars getting back in the game.

"It wasn't just me," said Abraham, who came into the game with only five sacks on the season. "The whole team was able to get to the quarterback."

Ryan was 19 of 26 for 224 yards and three touchdowns, with a season-high rating of 137.3. White caught two of the scoring passes, Julio Jones the other.

Gabbert was 12 of 22 for 141 yards, also throwing an interception during a truly awful night full of bad decisions when he wasn't running for his life. He was sacked five times and got most of his yards on a meaningless final drive, which resulted in the only offensive touchdown of the night: a 16-yard pass to Chastin West with 59 seconds remaining.

"It wasn't our best night," Gabbert said. "We've just got to learn from it, take the positives out of it and just get better."

The injury-riddled Jaguars, playing out the season with an interim coach and a new owner, were coming off their best performance, having scored 41 straight points in a 41-14 victory over Tampa Bay. But, playing for the third time in 11 days, they couldn't build any momentum for a strong finish.

Shahid Khan must have been wondering why he paid an estimated $760 million to buy the team from original Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver, a deal that was unanimously approved by NFL owners a day earlier.

"You've just got to keep fighting," Gabbert said. "Things didn't go our way early, but what can you do? It's football."

On the first snap of the game, Michael Turner burst off left guard for 15 yards, and the Falcons were off and running. Ryan capped the opening drive by stepping up to avoid the pressure, flipping a short pass to Jones, then watching the rookie turn on an impressive burst of speed for a 29-yard touchdown.

Gabbert got an idea of what he'd be up against on his first snap: Abraham shrugged off a blocker and threw the quarterback for a 10-yard loss. The rookie finally completed a pass on the final play of the opening quarter, but Sean Weatherspoon sniffed out the screen and slammed Marcedes Lewis for a 4-yard loss.

Matt Bryant kicked a 33-yard field goal that made it 10-0, then another brutal mistake by the Jaguars early in the second quarter helped turn this one into a rout. Jarrett Dillard let a punt slip right through his hands, and Weatherspoon fell on it at the Jacksonville 5. The next play, Turner rumbled into the end zone standing to make it 17-0.

The Falcons weren't done, not by a long shot. Ryan finished off a nine-play, 72-yard by hooking up with White in the back on the end zone on a 6-yard touchdown, a pass that Tony Gonzalez was nearly in position to catch as well.

Now down 24-0, the Jaguars couldn't even get off the field without turning it over again. Abraham popped the ball loose from Gabbert, and after a wild scramble Curtis Lofton finally fell on it at the Jacksonville 19. That set up Bryant's second field goal, a 31-yarder on the final play of the half.

"I've just got to get rid of the ball," Gabbert said. "I can't take those sacks and those fumbles. That's completely on me."

NOTES: Jacksonville had negative net yards passing most of the game and finished with just 91, actually lowering what was already the NFL's worst passing average. ... Jones finished with five catches for 85 yards. ... Jacksonville's Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL's leading rusher, had 112 yards on 17 carries.

Michael Kors designs a successful IPO

Richard Drew / AP

Fashion designer Michael Kors, center, applauds as the IPO of Michael Kors Holdings begins trading on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange Thursday.

By Sarah Skidmore, The Associated Press

Michael Kors understands what fashion-conscious shoppers desire. Apparently, he knows what investors want, too.

The designer's company, Michael Kors Holdings Ltd., raised $944 million after selling 47.2 million shares in its initial public stock offering Wednesday night, valuing the company at $3.8 billion. It had planned to sell about 42 million shares for between $17 and $19. But like demand for some of Kors' designs, investors clamored for more and that helped push the price to $20 per share.

The shares spiked 22 percent in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange to $24.47. The stock was lately up $3.90, or 20 percent, at $23.90.

The success of the Michael Kors IPO is a testament to the resilience of the well-heeled set which has continued spending through tough economic times, and the company's strategy of producing a diverse array of items, so that it's not overly focused on individual product categories in case one of them falls out of fashion. More broadly, the IPO defies what has been an otherwise weak year for companies looking to raise money through new offerings of stock. For Kors personally, it means a payday of more than $100 million.

"The IPO market has not shown grandiose returns, but this was on everyone's buy list," said Scott Sweet, a senior managing partner at IPOBoutique.com.

Kors, an American designer who became a household name in recent years as a judge on fashion design competition show "Project Runway," has been one of the top names in fashion for years, dressing countless celebrities and even first lady Michelle Obama. His designs, for men and women, are more practical luxury than haute couture. The focus is traditional American style with just a hint of high-fashion glitz.

The company, based in Hong Kong, makes high-end handbags, shoes and clothing that it sells at its own shops and through other retailers. A Michael Kors crocodile handbag can run more than $2,000 and a halter dress more than $7,000, but the bulk of its business is centered on more affordable luxuries for wealthy shoppers such as $300 sunglasses and $600 purses.

While most consumers are feeling the drag of the economy, wealthy shoppers in the U.S. and abroad are spending more freely. That has helped companies such as jewelry seller Tiffany & Co., handbag maker Coach Inc. and luxury retailer Nordstrom Inc. recover from the recession faster than the rest of the industry. In 2011, U.S. retail sales of luxury items is up more than 5 percent from a mid-recession low in September of 2009, according to an estimate by MasterCard SpendingPulse.

Michael Kors has been one of the beneficiaries of that spending. The company's net income soared 85 percent to $56.9 million in the 2011 fiscal year and its revenue increased 58 percent to $803.3 million in 2011. Revenue from its stores open at least a year, considered a key indicator of a retailer's performance, jumped 31 percent during the first two months of its third quarter, which ended Nov. 26.

The company's strong performance is helping to fuel rapid expansion. The company added 30 stores in its 2010 fiscal year and plans to open 40 more in fiscal 2011. It currently operates 184 stores in North America and 37 internationally. Its growth potential makes it stand out in a less-than-stellar year for the IPO market. In 2011, the total number of IPOs filed rose nearly 5 percent from 2010, but the number that actually made it to market fell 20 percent, according to Renaissance Capital, as many companies either withdrew or postponed their offerings because of the skittish financial markets. Adding to the malaise, total proceeds raised through IPOs have fallen 11 percent.

"You have to separate the overall market environment from a company like Michael Kors that is in a very strong growth period," said Linda Killian, principal at Renaissance Capital, an IPO-focused investment firm. "Investors want to own a company like this, irrespective of what is going on in the market."

Prada and Salvatore Ferragamo, two other luxury brands, went public this year with limited success. Prada had a lackluster debut in June on the Hong Kong exchange and its shares have fallen 8 percent since. Ferragamo's stock jumped on its first day in trading in Milan, but it has climbed only 9 percent from its closing price on its first day.

Analysts say Michael Kors could fare better because it is a younger company, has a more recognized name and it targets a broader swath of shoppers. It has gone public in its growth phase, while Prada and Ferragamo made their debut much later in their development.

But there is some risk. Some analysts worry the potential growth of the luxury market is overblown and that wealthier shoppers could retreat if more economic tumult hits.

"Luxury has been strong," said Morningstar retail analyst Paul Swinand. "But I worry that we are at the peak."
Michael Kors stock trades under the ticker symbol KORS. Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs were the lead underwriters on the offering.
