(AP) ? Firefighters around the West took advantage of moderating conditions to make inroads against wildfires that have destroyed homes, forces residents to evacuate and burned hundreds of thousands of acres of timber and brush.

But a new wildfire near Redding, Calif., was causing problems early Friday, just hours after it was spotted and quickly grew to 1,200 acres. Authorities say the fire is threatening dozens of homes and has forced evacuations.

In Colorado, crews expect to fully contain the state's most destructive wildfire by Friday. Colorado Springs officials lifted evacuation orders for 126 more homes at the 28-square-mile Waldo Canyon fire, which damaged or destroyed nearly 350 homes and killed two people.

Coroner's officials identified the victims as 74-year-old William Everett and his wife, Barbara, 73.

Authorities said Thursday that they know where the fire started but did not disclose the location. The cause was under investigation.

In Wyoming and Montana Thursday, firefighters took advantage of a lull in searing heat and shifting winds to attack wildfires.

Temperatures in the mid-80s, higher humidity and calm winds aided crews battling the 95-square-mile Oil Creek fire just northwest of Newcastle, a town of about 3,500 near northeast Wyoming's Black Hills. About 25 families were evacuated from Newcastle's outskirts. The fire was 40 percent contained.

In southeast Wyoming, heavy air power, including four large air tankers, helped increase containment of the 16-square-mile Squirrel Creek fire to 51 percent. The tankers included two military C130s from a fleet that was reduced to seven Monday when one crashed in South Dakota's Black Hills.

"We really knocked it for a change, instead of us getting whacked," said Larry Helmerick, spokesman at the fire. Authorities planned to allow more people to return to dozens of evacuated summer cabins near the Colorado line in Medicine Bow National Forest.

Firefighters also reported progress on a 145-square-mile fire surrounding Laramie Peak, about 100 miles northwest of Cheyenne.

In southeastern Montana, more than 1,300 personnel took advantage of calm winds and temperatures in the 80s to make headway on five blazes that officials are now managing as one 480-square-mile wildfire complex so they can quickly deploy resources among the blazes.

"Slow and steady. We want the lines to hold," fire information officer Dixie Dies said.

High winds and triple-digit temperatures in central and southeastern Montana fanned the blazes earlier this week.

The 390-square-mile Ash Creek fire was about 70 percent contained. Some ranches and homes near Ashland remained threatened, and Highway 212 between Ashland and Broadus was still closed.

At the 72-square-mile Taylor Creek fire near Ft. Howes, managers worked to connect fire lines dug by local residents. The complex also included the Powerline fire, about 30 miles from Hysham. Firefighters contained a late Wednesday run of 400 acres on that blaze.

In Utah, rain and cooler temperatures helped crews hold fire lines on the 8,200-acre Shingle fire about 30 miles southeast of Cedar City. The fire threatened 550 cabins and summer homes in Dixie National Forest.

Up to a quarter-inch of rain fell on Utah's largest wildfire, the 160-square-mile Clay Springs fire east of Delta. The blaze was 64 percent contained.

The National Weather Service said moderate temperatures were expected in Colorado and Wyoming through the weekend but warned that hot and dry weather was expected to return to Montana.

The University of Nottingham has begun the search for a new class of injectable materials that will stimulate stem cells to regenerate damaged tissue in degenerative and age related disorders of the bone, muscle and heart.

The work, which is currently at the experimental stage, could lead to treatments for diseases that currently have no cure. The aim is to produce radical new treatments that will reduce the need for invasive surgery, optimise recovery and reduce the risk of undesirable scar tissue.

The research, which brings together expertise in The University of Nottingham's Malaysia Campus (UNMC) and UK campus, is part of the Rational Bioactive Materials Design for Tissue Generation project (Biodesign). This 11m EU funded research project which involves 21 research teams from across Europe is made up of leading experts in degenerative disease and regenerative medicine.

Kevin Shakesheff, Professor of Advanced Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering and Head of the School of Pharmacy, said: "This research heralds a step-change in approaches to tissue regeneration. Current biomaterials are poorly suited to the needs of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The aim of Biodesign is to develop new materials and medicines that will stimulate tissue regeneration rather than wait for the body to start the process itself. The aim is to fabricate advanced biomaterials that match the basic structure of each tissue so the cells can take over the recovery process themselves."

More effective and affordable treatments

The demand for organ transplants is great, but there are few donors and transplant rejection remains an ever present concern. This has led to the development of an interdisciplinary research field called "regenerative medicine." Researchers within this field are not only looking to help patients requiring organ transplants, but also those with severe burns, muscle injuries, cardiovascular problems or patients with broken bones that are not healing.

In general, the body's wound repair process works in much the same way regardless of what the condition is or which organ is affected. For instance; the sequence of events that follows a heart attack is similar to the process that takes place following spinal-cord injury. The aim of regenerative medicine is to create a 'seed bed' from which tissue can grow. This technique will lead to more effective and affordable treatments for diseases such as cancer and osteoporosis and for patients who have suffered a heart attack or experienced major trauma.

Nottingham and UNMC are developing a new class of injectable material that stimulates stem cells to form new blood vessels, heart and bone tissue.

UNMC is building on its expertise in nanotechnology for drug delivery. Dr Andrew Morris, an expert in transdermal drug delivery at UNMC, said: "Our understanding of genomics and tissue regeneration means that medicines of the future will be much smarter. We are moving away from simple drugs being given to a patient in a tablet and hoping that they will have the desired effect. Here in Malaysia we are looking at synthesising microparticles which can potentially be injected directly into a patient at the site of injury to promote tissue re-growth. These microparticles would act as a scaffold to encourage regrowth in bone tissue, skeletal muscle and potentially even cardiac muscle."

Dr Nashiru Billa, an expert in drug delivery in the School of Pharmacy, said: "This research is going to have a significant impact on patients. The data obtained so far is quite promising. In future you could include in the delivery system anti-cancer drugs that would not only lead to the growth of the tissue but would also help kill the cancer cells within the bone tissue."

International research involving scientists and students

The Biodesign research also offers exciting opportunities for The University of Nottingham's UK based 4th year undergraduate Pharmacy students. Students registered in the UK are going out to Malaysia to complete their final year research projects. They will be carrying out some of the important early stage synthesis work and producing the microparticles.

Dr Morris said: "The undergraduates are the PhD students, the lecturers and professors of the future. From this early stage work we hope to get publications from this and we hope to see their names on the front of the article at the end of the project."

The EU research funding for this project is another significant milestone for the growth of research activity at UNMC. Professor Stephen Doughty, Vice-Provost for Teaching and Learning at UNMC and a member of the Biodesign team said "It is very pleasing once again to see major research grants awarded to top quality researchers at UNMC and to see the full international potential of The University of Nottingham being harnessed in this way."

Microsoft engineer exposes international Android spam botnet

An anti-spam engineer working for Microsoft has exposed on his MSDN Cyber Security Blog an international botnet controlling Android devices that is being used to send spam on an industrial scale. Terry Zink found that all of the spam originated from Yahoo's mail servers, taking advantage of compromised Yahoo accounts.

Interestingly, during further investigations he found that the footer of every spam message contained "Sent from Yahoo! Mail on Android," and due to Yahoo's practice of stamping the IPs used when connecting to the service he was able to trace them.

"Luckily, Yahoo stamps the IP address in the headers of where the device connected to its service.? I looked up where the IPs are geo-located: Chile, Indonesia, Lebanon, Oman, Philippines, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Ukraine, and Venezuela," he wrote in his blog post.

Zink believes this latest security issue is the result of a new piece of malware that targets Yahoo Mail accounts on Android devices, which once compromised are used to send spam messages.

"I am betting that the users of those phones downloaded some malicious Android app in order to avoid paying for a legitimate version and they got more than they bargained for," wrote Zink. "Either that or they acquired a rogue Yahoo Mail app."

Reports of malware have increased for Google's Android mobile OS along with its rise in popularity. There have been several separate reports this year alone, including the first ever-reported Android browser-based malware?in May?known as "NotCompatible", which propagated via Android's own built in browser. Fortunately, for those infected it didn't appear to do anything malicious and still required permission to install.

While Android users are free to download apps from anywhere via a process known as sideloading, it's always best practice to download apps and other content via the Google Play (previously Android Marketplace) store rather than risk installing unverified software on your devices. This serves as another reminder of the pitfalls you can encounter by installing apps from untrusted sources.
