Ricky Martin has remained mostly tight-lipped about his personal life since coming out in 2010. But in the latest issue of Details magazine, the Latin pop singer reveals some surprisingly intimate details about both fatherhood and his relationship with longtime partner Carlos Gonzalez.

In the interview, the 40-year-old Martin quickly dismisses reports that he had sought citizenship in Spain in an effort to wed Gonzalez under that nation's same-sex marriage laws. "Everybody is asking me when I?m going to get married," he said. "People that I don?t know are pushing it. But it?s not something that we?re talking about."

Still, the star -- who has previously spoken of his desire to get married -- talks in depth about his views on marriage equality: "I don't want to blame the government. I think there?s a stolen faith ?- an interpretation of what God 'says.' That's your God -- I have my God. It?s about civil rights. I'm not telling you what to believe. I wish people understood that love manifests in different ways. Allow me to have my life and I won?t mess with yours."

Have you ever played that game where in your marriage you are or were so angry you screamed in frustration that you wanted a divorce? And, whether or not you meant it, it was now out there, floating around. The little germ had been spit out into the air like the flu bug and all you could now hope for was that in your moment of anger, if you didn?t mean it, your spouse wouldn?t catch open his mouth and swallow it and catch the disease.

Or, how about ?The Silent Game?? And, I?m not talking about the one you play with your kids to get them to shut them up for 5 minutes of peace and quiet, but the one you play with your spouse when you are so pissed off you don?t want to look at their face, hear their voice, speak to them or be in the same space as them for one more second so you pretend as if they do not exist?

Another fun one is the ?Who Can Scream The Loudest? game. That is when you get in each other?s faces and can actually feel the hot breath and spit come flying out with the words because you are so close to each other during the shouting. When you are done, your voice is hoarse and your ears are ringing and no one feels better.

If you think about it, we are taught to play games when we are young, from Duck, Duck, Goose to Ring Around the Rosy and Red Rover Red Rover, we watch games on TV from game shows to sports, and let?s not get into the mating and dating games that are played. Games are played all around us, but why do we play them when something so precious such as a relationship is involved? Are we testing the other person to see how loyal they are, or to see how committed they, or do we want to see how in love they are? And are these games a fair test?

A Pro at Wii Tennis

Look, I?m no psychotherapist, and I don?t even play one on TV, but I do know how to play a game or two and even have the pro status to my Mii character on Wii tennis, so I feel qualified to speak about this. In my first marriage, I excelled at the ?I want a divorce? game. I believe it was said about 20 times a week on average. And, although I don?t think I meant it when I was saying it, the truth was, I meant it and didn?t even know it.

We fought every single day ? screamed, shouted, threw things ? it was a mess. Then we would have this crazy passionate sex. It was a mess. It was a game. It was a disaster waiting to happen. It was a divorce waiting to happen. It was a divorce that did happen. Instead of looking at the issues we hid behind the shouting the screaming and the flying objects and the hot sweaty sex (yes, I said that twice) and played the game of our life, in the process ruining our young lives while not even knowing the damage were doing to each other.

As a side bar, I am shaking my head in disbelief at my own stupidity of all of the above at the moment!

A Moment of Silence

Marriage number two was about the art of silence. He played the quiet game while I played the, I know you can see me, so quit ignoring me now game. Talk about a disaster. He was the master, and I mean the master class master at this game. He could earn billions of dollars teaching this game, that?s how good he is at it. He could open up little storefronts and offer up classes and rake it in, that?s how good he is at it. In fact, I think I need to shoot him an email about this as a new business idea.

Back to the damage of the game though, and this game did some damage. You see, silence is worse than screaming because silence is so belittling that you start to feel like you are less than nothing and eventually you make yourself as small as possible in your relationship, really wanting to disappear. You start to tread as lightly as you can and make as little noise as you can and you try to not upset the proverbial apple cart so you won?t be put back in the cone of silence once again, where it is so lonely you want to die.

Divorce Is Not The End Game

When two people walk down the aisle, they don?t make a mental list of all the games they are going to play in their head with the end game being divorce, because divorce is not the end game for anyone who enters marriage. But, when we play games, divorce is often the end of the games that we play.

What is the solution? Don?t play the games. Sounds easy, doesn?t it? It?s not though, and we all know it, because if it were, then we would all still be married or happy in our marriages and marriage wouldn?t be hard work even when it is good, but it can be done. The first step is to not engage. Don?t engage in a shouting match, bite your tongue when you want to scream out how much you hate your spouse or you want a divorce and when you want to keep silent and not talk about the issues, force yourself to sit down and talk about it.

Marriage takes work, and from those of us who are divorced, it?s easier to stay married than to be where we are today, so do what you can to stay where you are, and yes, this piece of advice is coming from a divorce coach. Keep the games on the playing field or in the bedroom if you prefer, but out of your relationships.

Japan's nuclear safety standards called flawed (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's nuclear safety chief said Wednesday the country's regulations are flawed, outdated and below global standards, and he apologized for their failure when a tsunami crippled one plant last year.

Haruki Madarame admitted Japanese safety requirements such as for tsunami and power losses were too loose and many officials have looked the other way and tried to avoid changes.

"I must admit that the nuclear safety guidelines that we have issued until now have various flaws," he said. "We've even said that we don't need to consider risks for massive tsunamis and lengthy power outages."

Madarame, who heads the Nuclear Safety Commission, was speaking at a parliament-sponsored inquiry investigating the meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi last year.

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami knocked out power and cooling systems at the plant, sending its three reactors into meltdowns and causing massive radiation leaks. More than 100,000 people around the plant relocated due to fears of radiation impact on their health.

Madarame said officials have never taken seriously the impact of power outages, assuming that the likelihood of hours-long blackouts in high-tech Japan would be low. He said they thought keeping backup generators would be enough, and never thought of the risk of placing them in the basement ? the area most prone to seawater damage from tsunami. The destruction of the generators at Fukushima Dai-ichi left no method available to cool the reactor cores, which eventually melted down.

Japanese safety regulators have missed chances to make improvements when such steps were taken in other countries. For instance, the NSC's counterpart Nuclear Regulatory Commission required utilities to upgrade how they would handle power outages more than a decade ago. Japan also failed to respond to International Atomic Energy Agency guidelines to upgrade safety in case of severe plant damage and radioactive leaks.

"We ended up wasting our time looking for excuses that these measures are not needed in Japan," Madarame said.

The NSC, a panel of about 100 experts who provide nonbinding technical advice, has been criticized as toothless since the crisis. The unit, along with other safety and regulator bodies, including the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, will be reorganized and become part of a new nuclear regulatory agency under the Environment Ministry. Critics have long said that the placement of NISA under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ? which promotes nuclear energy ? has also contributed to lax supervision of the industry.

Such friendly relations between regulators and the industry often resulted in rubber-stamping of the minimum safety steps proposed by operators, and safety inspections are based on techniques "from 30 years ago," Madarame said.

In another revelation showing a lack of expertise among regulators, Nobuaki Terasaka, head of NISA until August, said he has no science or nuclear background and hardly participated in crisis management at the prime minister's office.

As a whole, NISA could not fully serve its expected role when it was most needed, he said.

"We lacked sufficient staffing of regulators with technical expertise who could operate in a crisis like that, which involved multiple reactors," Terasaka said. "When it comes to expertise, knowledge and skill, NISA is weaker than our U.S. counterparts."

Terasaka initially went over to the premier's office but retreated within hours to NISA, where no live teleconference or hotline was available, he said.

NISA has issued emergency safety guidelines requiring nuclear plants nationwide to improve readiness for disasters since Fukushima's, but Madarame urged NISA to fully review them because they are "all temporary measures."

His comment raises a question over the credibility of the ongoing "stress tests," a new set of safety requirement for idled reactors to startup, parliamentary probe panel chief Kiyoshi Kurokawa said after the inquiry.

Only three of Japan's 54 reactors are operating now. Authorities ordered all reactors shut down to undergo the special tests to check for their ability to withstand disasters like the massive earthquake and tsunami that caused the Fukushima crisis.

Radiation After Lung Cancer Surgery Doesn't Help All: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Feb. 13 (HealthDay News) -- For older people with a certain type and stage of lung cancer, administering radiation treatment after surgery may not extend survival, according to a new study.

Radiation is not without risks, and the new study "questions the benefit of this treatment," said study leader Dr. Juan Wisnivesky, an associate professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

He and his team looked at survival outcomes in more than 1,300 lung cancer patients with locally advanced disease, 710 of whom got the postoperative radiation therapy. It is routinely given in an attempt to prevent recurrence.

No substantial survival benefits were found at one year or three years.

"We found in this group of elderly patients, many of whom received the treatment, the use of the treatment did not appear to help them live longer," he said.

Patients in the study, all 65 or older, had stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer and involvement of N2 lymph nodes. Their cancer had spread but not widely. All had been diagnosed from 1992 through 2005 and were included in the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, which is linked to Medicare.

The study, published online Feb. 13 in the journal Cancer, was funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute.

About 226,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year, 90 percent of which will be non-small cell, according to the American Cancer Society. Within non-small cell cancers, there are three main subtypes.

Previous studies looking into the survival benefits of post-op radiation for this group of patients have produced mixed results, Wisnivesky said.

However, in his study, he found no substantial differences between those who had the treatment and those who didn't. And, radiation therapy carries risks. Besides the inconvenience of the additional treatments, the therapy can cause irritation of the lungs and inflammation of the esophagus, he said.

"Patients need to be well informed," he said. "They have to have a good discussion with their doctor about what are the potential benefits," he said. They also need to discuss possible side effects.

Another expert, Dr. Dan Raz, an assistant professor of surgery at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif., emphasized that the study is not talking about all stage 3 lung cancer patients, but only a specific group, those with stage 3 non-small cell and involvement of the N2 lymph nodes.

"It's a small subset of patients" of all lung cancer patients, he said, adding that it's a challenging group.

Some previous small studies have also suggested that post-op radiation may be unnecessary in these patients, and the new findings add to that argument, he said.

"In the end, survival and quality of life are the most important things for patients," Raz said. But recurrence, a key factor, was not addressed in the study, he said.

The new finding "wouldn't change the way I treat patients, but I think it raises a very important point."

What's needed is a trial comparing use of post-operative radiation and its non-use in this group of patients, Raz said. According to Wisnivesky, such a study is under way in France, but will take several years to finish.

"Even little things. I was sick a couple of months ago and was thinking, 'Well what if I have to go to the hospital? She can't come and see me.' Legally we are strangers."

One San Francisco couple, Stuart Gaffney and John Lewis, was legally married in 2008 before the Proposition 8 ban, but, according to the Guardian, still makes the trip to City Hall every Valentine's Day. "Instead, we thank the clerk," said Gaffney. "We go up and present flowers, because we know firsthand that she'd marry us if she could," he said. "Because she did -- she married us in 2008."

California came one step closer to finally legalizing same-sex marriage one week before Valentine's Day when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals deemed the voter-approved Proposition 8 -- a ban on same-sex marriage -- unconstitutional. The court ruled 2-1 in favor of overturning the ban, saying that it served no purpose other than to "lessen the status and human dignity" of the LGBT community.

"It's good news," said Reverend Dr. William Knight of Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco, an LGBT-friendly parish, to The Huffington Post. "We're fortunate that our state is moving in the direction of honoring love instead of demonizing love."

However, while the decision was a victorious battle, same-sex marriage supporters are still deep in the war. The Associated Press reported:

The ruling will not take effect until the deadline passes in two weeks for Proposition 8's backers to appeal to a larger panel of the 9th Circuit. Lawyers for the coalition of conservative religious groups that sponsored the measure said they have not decided if they will seek a 9th Circuit rehearing or file an appeal directly to the Supreme Court.

It has been an especially busy week for marriage equality, as Washington State officially became the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage on Monday.

"I'm proud our same-sex couples will no longer be treated as separate but equal," said Governor Chris Gregoire.

According to the Associated Press, opponents in Washington filed a referendum that same afternoon. Should they collect more than 120,577 valid voter signatures, the law will be put on hold pending a November vote.

But Seattle resident Bret Tiderman told the Associated Press that the probably fight ahead wouldn't spoil the current celebration. "You have to relish this moment."
