New research in The FASEB Journal shows that toxins taken from the venom of sea anemones could be the next wave of insecticides and may even be used to treat pain, cardiac disorders and other conditions

Bethesda, MDAs insects evolve to become resistant to insecticides, the need to develop new ways to control pests grows. A team of scientists from Leuven, Belgium have discovered that the sea anemone's venom harbors several toxins that promise to become a new generation of insecticides that are environmentally friendly and avoid resistance by the insects. Since these toxins disable ion channels that mediate pain and inflammation, they could also spur drug development aimed at pain, cardiac disorders, epilepsy and seizure disorders, and immunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This finding is described in the December 2012 issue of The FASEB Journal.

"Are toxins friend or foe? The more we understand these toxins, they are more friend, and less foe," said Jan Tytgat, Ph.D., co-author of this study from the Laboratory of Toxicology at the University of Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. "Toxicology shows us how to exploit Mother Nature's biodiversity for better and healthier living."

To make this discovery, Tytgat and colleagues extracted venom from the sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, and purified three main toxins present in the venom. The toxins were characterized in depth, using biochemical and electrophysiological techniques. This provided insight into their structure, functional role and mechanisms of action. The discovery of these toxins may be considered similar to the discovery of a new drug, as they are compounds which could lead to new insecticides and possibly new treatments for human diseases.

"Because these toxins are aimed at important ion channels present not only in insect cells, they form the leading edge of our new biotechnology. Discovery of this useful marine toxin should provide additional incentive to preserve the fragile coral reefs where anemones thrive," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "But, given current attitudes, I suspect there's a better chance of a sea anemone killing a stink bug than for us to reverse our inroads on ocean life."

B.J. Upton is on his way to Atlanta, while Andy Pettitte is staying in pinstripes.

With the winter meetings only days away, baseball's offseason began to heat up Wednesday with a pair of moves involving potential closers: Ryan Madson joined the Angels and Jonathan Broxton remained with the Reds.

Hours later, the Braves made big news.

Looking for a new center fielder and some right-handed pop, Atlanta found both in Upton, who had 28 homers and 31 steals for Tampa Bay last season. The fleet-footed free agent agreed to a $75.25 million, five-year contract, a person familiar with the deal said Wednesday night.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been completed. It was expected to be announced Thursday once Upton passes his physical.

Upton's score would be the biggest free-agent contract of the offseason so far and the largest in Braves history.

Pettitte, meanwhile, will return for another season with the New York Yankees.

Feeling strong at age 40, the veteran lefty completed a one-year deal worth $12 million, putting baseball's biggest postseason winner back in the Bronx.

"I think we're good enough to go all the way, I really do," Pettitte said on a conference call. "I'm at the point where, if I didn't feel like we had a chance to win it deep down, I wouldn't do this."

The five-time World Series champion retired after the 2010 season to spend more time at home but then decided to come back this year ? while working as an instructor during spring training ? and signed a contract guaranteeing him $2.5 million.

Pettitte went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 12 starts. He missed almost three months because of a broken lower left leg, sustained when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of Cleveland's Casey Kotchman on June 27.

"I definitely think that if I would have pitched a full season and thrown 200 innings, that I definitely wouldn't feel as fresh and physically feel as good as I do right now," Pettitte said. "Obviously, I feel like that helped lead me to a quick decision."

The move means the AL East champs are set to start 2013 with the same rotation as last season: CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Pettitte, Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova or David Phelps.

Next up for general manager Brian Cashman could be a contract for 43-year-old closer Mariano Rivera, determined to come back from a torn knee ligament.

Madson is making a comeback from Tommy John surgery, and he agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels five days before the start of baseball's winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn.

The longtime Philadelphia reliever missed last season with Cincinnati, which signed him in January after a stellar performance in 2011 with the Phillies. He had surgery in April on a torn ligament in his right elbow.

Well ahead of schedule in his recovery, Madson said he expects to be the Angels' closer. General manager Jerry Dipoto agreed the veteran is likely to supplant Ernesto Frieri when fully healthy.

"I feel like if I can throw the ball like I'm capable of, I expect to have that role," Madson said. "I expect to come to spring training and earn the job."

Broxton isn't sure what role he'll have in Cincinnati after securing a $21 million, three-year contract that gives the NL Central champions a chance to reconfigure their starting rotation.

The two-time All-Star came to the Reds last July in a trade with Kansas City. He filled in as the closer when Aroldis Chapman developed a tired shoulder and had four saves in six chances overall with a 2.82 ERA.

Now the Reds have the option of turning Chapman into a starter, which was the plan last season until Madson blew out his elbow. The team has told Chapman to prepare for next season as a starter, although it hasn't committed to Broxton as the closer.

"Nothing's in stone right now," assistant general manager Bob Miller said. "When we talked to Jonathan we said he was going to be at the back end of the bullpen. What happens depends on spring training and how things play out in the offseason."

Broxton wanted a multiyear deal so he could settle in one place. He didn't insist on assurances he'd be a closer.

"I went into the offseason with an open mind," Broxton said. "I've got experience in both roles. Even if Chapman doesn't work out as a starter, he can come back in and fill in as the closer. I'll be happy to throw the eighth (inning). It doesn't matter. You saw what he did last year."

The 28-year-old Upton hit .246 with 78 RBIs for the Rays last season. He will replace free agent Michael Bourn as the Braves' center fielder and should provide much-needed power from the right side.

Upton's first full season with Tampa Bay was 2007, when he hit a career-best .300 with 24 homers and 22 stolen bases. His home run totals have increased in each of the last three seasons, but he has hit below .250 with more than 150 strikeouts in four straight years.

Bourn was the Braves' leadoff hitter, but Upton is not expected to fill that role.

Elsewhere, the Boston Red Sox made a flurry of minor moves, trading right-handers Zach Stewart and Sandy Rosario as well as third baseman Danny Valencia.

Stewart was sent to Pittsburgh and Rosario to Oakland for players to be named. Valencia was shipped to Baltimore for cash.

Boston also hired Greg Colbrunn as hitting coach.

Athletics reliever Pat Neshek agreed to a one-year contract that avoided salary arbitration, while Kansas City traded right-hander Vin Mazzaro and first baseman Clint Robinson to the Pirates for minor league pitchers Luis Santos and Luis Rico.

The Chicago Cubs designated right-hander Casey Coleman for assignment to make roster room for newcomer Scott Feldman, who agreed to a $6 million, one-year contract the previous day.

Feldman's former team, the Texas Rangers, acquired right-hander Cory Burns from San Diego for a player to be named or cash.

How climate change could affect entire forest ecosystems

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? The fog comes in, and a drop of water forms on a pine needle, rolls down the needle, and falls to the forest floor. The process is repeated over and over, on each pine needle of every tree in a forest of Bishop pines on Santa Cruz Island, off the coast of Santa Barbara. That fog drip helps the entire forest ecosystem stay alive.

Thousands of years ago, in cooler and wetter times, Bishop pine trees are thought to have proliferated along the West Coast of the U.S. and Mexico. Now, stratus clouds -- the low-altitude clouds known locally as "June gloom" -- help keep the trees growing on Santa Cruz Island, Santa Rosa Island, and on one island off Baja California. Other than these locations, Bishop pine trees grow only farther north in California where it is cooler and wetter.

Mariah S. Carbone, first author of a new paper, titled "Cloud Shading and Fog Drip Influence the Metabolism of a Coastal Pine Ecosystem," and her co-authors, studied the influence of clouds on the largest Bishop pine forest of Santa Cruz Island. Carbone is a postdoctoral fellow with UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS). Their study was published in the journal Global Change Biology.

"When people think about climate change, they're often thinking about temperature and precipitation," said Carbone. "When you think about precipitation, it's rain and snow, depending on where you are. What this study showed is that you can have really important water inputs coming from clouds that influence the carbon cycle."

She explained that clouds are one of the largest uncertainties in global climate, and that the forest ecosystem interactions with clouds have a large impact -- one that has rarely been studied before, particularly in Southern California.

Changes in cloudiness or cloud height with global warming will alter the types of forest ecosystems that grow in coastal California, explained Carbone. While predictions about how rainfall will change in California over the next 50 years are uncertain, fog and low-stratus clouds might decline as sea-surface temperatures warm. Like the relict Bishop pines on Santa Cruz Island, and the majestic coastal Redwood forests in Northern California, forests remove and store carbon from the atmosphere, and thus are important for understanding greenhouse gas concentrations in the future. These coastal forests are also highly valued for their aesthetic and recreation qualities.

Fog is often present in coastal California during May through August. It occurs when the land warms in the spring and summer, and moist ocean air is pulled over cold, upwelling coastal waters. This moist air then condenses under a stable atmospheric inversion layer, creating low clouds or fog banks.

"The finding that summer fog strongly impacts carbon cycling highlights the need for improved understanding of whether we should expect coastal summer cloud behavior to change in a warmer world," said second author A. Park Williams, a former graduate student in UCSB's Geography Department, now at Los Alamos National Laboratory. "A change in summer fogginess could produce temperature, moisture, and carbon feedbacks in coastal ecosystems that easily swamp out the effects expected from increased greenhouse gases alone," said Williams.

The carbon cycle involves the movement of billions of tons of carbon between the oceans, lands, and atmosphere every year. Increased amounts of carbon dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas, ??are injected into the atmosphere and contribute to climate change.

The scientists received help from NASA and NOAA in collecting information. "We used satellite data to map the spatial distribution of cloud cover across the western portion of Santa Cruz Island," said senior author Christopher J. Still, formerly an associate professor at UC Santa Barbara, now at Oregon State University. "We had some evidence of a cloud cover gradient from the coast to inland, based on our own observations and our weather station data, but the satellite data -- from NOAA and NASA satellites -- really allowed us to quantify this gradient across the western half of the island and in particular at our two study sites," said Still.

Still said that the authors believe this study is unique in linking clouds to soil microbial activity. "While most previous research on fog and ecosystems has focused on its role in plant-water relations -- such as the well-known linkages between fog and coast Redwoods -- we show that soil microbial activity and metabolism in these coastal ecosystems may be very dependent on the light but frequent fog drip that occurs during the rainless summer months," said Still. The study is also unique in linking fog and low clouds to the carbon cycle of a coastal ecosystem, including its impact on tree growth and soil respiration.

"What we found was that there are two major effects of the clouds," said Carbone. "One is shading, which keeps the temperatures cooler and the soil moisture higher. The other is fog drip, which is a water input into the soil."

The soil moisture content was not depleted as rapidly where the trees were under more cloud cover, and thus they were able to grow longer into the dry season. Water pulses from fog drip immediately stimulated microbes in the litter and soil below, but did not directly enhance pine tree activity. The microbial activity releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"This study provides us with a greater understanding of how fog and the low coastal clouds which Californians commonly call 'the marine layer' affect plant growth and the activities of microorganisms in the soil," said John Randall, scientist with The Nature Conservancy, which owns and operates Santa Cruz Island in cooperation with the National Park Service and the University of California. "Their findings of the importance of fog and low clouds in influencing plant growth and survival and microbial metabolism in the soil will help us understand how changes in coastal fogs and low clouds that may accompany climate change will affect the forests and soils on Santa Cruz Island, other islands off the coast of California and Mexico, and all along the coast of the adjacent mainland."

The work on Santa Cruz Island, conducted in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy, was funded by grants from the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Kearney Foundation of Soil Science. The NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis have supported Carbone.

Nets take 1st Brooklyn matchup with Knicks in OT

NEW YORK (AP) ? Playing the Knicks never looked or sounded so sweet for the Nets in New Jersey.

The first matchup in Brooklyn was everything they could have hoped for.

"It was just a total 180 from what we saw last year, where it was mostly Knicks fans and all the chants and all the cheers were for them. It's great to feel that we have a home-court advantage finally," point guard Deron Williams said.

"This is what they talked about. I think this is what they visualized, was games like this. This was a playoff-type atmosphere. You could definitely feel it on the court and it was a great game to be a part of."

The Nets won the crowd ? and the game ? pulling out a 96-89 overtime victory on Monday night to tie the Knicks atop the Atlantic Division on a breakthrough night for their franchise.

With their fans outnumbering and at times outchanting the Knicks' counterparts for a change, the Nets improved to 7-1 in their new home before a sellout crowd of 17,732 that was more black than blue, just the way the Nets hoped.

"Every time some sort of Knicks contingency started to cheer, our fans got louder," Nets coach Avery Johnson said.

Jerry Stackhouse, wearing the No. 42 Jackie Robinson made famous in Brooklyn, hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3:31 left in overtime as the Nets controlled the extra period of a playoff-like game that neither team led by more than seven.

"It was absolutely fantastic. It was a great game for the fans," Nets center Brook Lopez said. "Having two great teams in New York, the fans are in the best position of all."

Lopez had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Williams added 16 points and 14 assists as the Nets joined the Knicks at 9-4 amid a loud chant of "Brook-lyn! Brook-lyn!" at the finish. Stackhouse scored 14 points.

Carmelo Anthony had 35 points and 13 rebounds, but was only 10 of 16 at the free throw line and missed the potential go-ahead jumper with about 5 seconds left in regulation. Tyson Chandler finished with 28 points and 10 boards, but no other Knicks player was in double figures.

"They're across the bridge. They're here in Brooklyn. We're in the city. They're in the same division, the same sports town. I guess you can say this started something," Anthony said.

Raymond Felton was just 3 of 19 from the field, but the Knicks had to stick with him with fellow point guard and former Nets star Jason Kidd out with back spasms. Another starter, Ronnie Brewer, was lost for the overtime with a dislocated left ring finger.

"I'm upset at myself. I had a bad shooting night," Felton said. "I'm probably just as mad as any fan, any player, anybody you could think about."

The first matchup of Brooklyn and New York pro franchises since the Dodgers played the New York Giants on Sept. 8, 1957, at the Polo Grounds was loud, energetic, and close throughout. Both teams played as if this meant more than the usual regular-season game.

It's the latest the Nets have had at least a share of first place since Jan. 30, 2007, when they and Toronto were both 22-23. It's the latest the Knicks and Nets have been tied atop the division since Nov. 30, 1997.

The game was originally scheduled as the Nov. 1 season opener for both teams but was postponed after Superstorm Sandy, when much of the mass transit around the city was knocked out. Barclays Center sits above a major transportation hub, and without subways running many fans wouldn't have been able to get here.

The Knicks have always been the clear No. 1 franchise in the area, even when the Nets had Kidd and were better, and the Nets have long believed the move to Brooklyn and the $1 billion Barclays Center would help them even things. Nationally televised and with more than 100 media members, this was easily their most anticipated game in years, though Johnson denied that it meant more to the Nets than the Knicks.

"I think it's just as important for them, because if we're so much the new kid on the block and we're trying to come in and gain some territorial rights, I think they're going to try to do everything they can to push back, so I think it's great," Johnson said before the game. "I don't think it's so much of a Duke-North Carolina rivalry yet, but hopefully one day it'll get there."

Johnson estimated that games in New Jersey since he'd been with the Nets were an 80-20 fan split for the Knicks, and he hoped that would turn around Monday. It didn't flip completely, but it seemed the home team's fans made up about 60-65 percent of the crowd, the orange and blue that was long so ubiquitous harder to spot this time.

But Johnson made it clear the Nets needed to win the game, not just the crowd, for this to be a successful night, and his team was in great position up five with 4 minutes to play in regulation. The Knicks ran off eight straight to take an 84-81 lead with 1:40 left, but they wouldn't score again. Lopez tied it with a free throw with 24 seconds remaining, and after Anthony missed a jumper, Williams was off on a long attempt before the buzzer.

Chandler dunked to open overtime, but the Nets answered with eight straight points, taking the lead for good at 89-86 on Stackhouse's 3-pointer with 3:31 remaining before three straight points from Gerald Wallace, who finished with 16.

Both sides downplayed the idea of a rivalry ? yet ? leading into the game, but change was noticeable right from the start.

The Knicks were loudly booed during the announcement of starting lineups, with Anthony, a Brooklyn native whom the Nets tried to acquire before the Knicks did, receiving the type of loud, mixed response that usually goes to LeBron James.

There were dueling chants on one early possession, Knicks fans hollering "Defense! Defense!" while Nets supporters tried to drown them out with "Brook-lyn! Brook-lyn!"

The only time crowd support seemed unanimous was when local sports stars or celebrities, such as Jay-Z and Beyonce sitting near the Nets bench, were shown on the overhead scoreboard.

Reggie Evans finished with 14 rebounds for the Nets.

NOTES: The Nets have won six straight at home for the first time since December 2003. They started 18-1 at home in 2002-03. ... The teams meet three times in the next 3? weeks. The Knicks return to Brooklyn on Dec. 11 and host the Nets on Dec. 19. ... With Kidd out, the Knicks started Kurt Thomas ? and actually got older. Kidd will turn 40 in March. Thomas, the league's oldest player, turned 40 in October. ... Anthony (10.9 ppg) and Lopez (7.9) entered as the NBA's top two first-quarter scorers. Anthony had only four points, while Lopez scored eight.

High court rejects appeal of ex-La. congressman

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court is leaving in place the corruption conviction of a former Louisiana congressman who hid money from bribes in his freezer.

The justices on Monday rejected without comment an appeal by former Rep. William Jefferson, who is serving a 13-year term in federal prison.

The Louisiana Democrat was convicted in 2009 after FBI agents investigating allegations of corruption found $90,000 in cash hidden in Jefferson's freezer.

A federal appeals court upheld all but one of the 11 counts on which a jury convicted Jefferson.

Punt return lifts Colts

By MICHAEL MAROT

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:46 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton made history Sunday.

Indianapolis' other emerging rookie star returned a punt 75 yards for one touchdown and caught an 8-yard pass from Andrew Luck in the third quarter to lead the Colts past Buffalo 20-13.

For the Colts (7-4), it was a milestone victory.

The win strengthened Indy's playoff position, Andrew Luck joined the 3,000-yard club, Reggie Wayne moved up two spots on the NFL's career receptions list and Hilton became the first player in franchise history to score on a receiving touchdown and on a kick return in the same game.

Ailing head coach Chuck Pagano was there to see - and savor - every special moment.

It was the second straight game Pagano has attended since being diagnosed with leukemia on Sept. 26. Pagano also received a standing ovation from the crowd when he appeared with team owner Jim Irsay briefly. Both waved to the fans.

But this was no textbook win for the Colts.

Offensively, they were sluggish. Luck finished 20 of 37 for 240 yards with one touchdown and one interception. And defensively, they couldn't quite keep the Bills at arm's length.

C.J. Spiller ran 14 times for 107 yards to lead Buffalo (4-7), which still has not won at Indianapolis since 1998 and has dropped seven of the last eight against their former AFC East rival. Ryan Fitzpatrick was 17 of 33 for 180 yards with one TD and one interception, and Stevie Johnson caught six passes for 106 yards.

The Bills did end their red-zone touchdown drought when Fitzpatrick threw a 1-yard TD pass to Lee Smith to cut Indy's lead to 20-13 with 11:30 left in the game.

But that wasn't quite enough against Hilton and the Colts.

Hilton got things started by fielding Shawn Powell's 48-yard punt at his own 25, faking out Smith, breaking another tackle in the middle of the field and sprinting to the end zone for Indy's first punt return for a score in five years.

Then things bogged down.

The Bills reached the red zone twice and managed just a pair of short field goals from Rian Lindell, who hit from 33 yards and 31 yards.

Indy countered with a 25-yard field goal from Adam Vinatieri late in the second quarter, and then took advantage of Buffalo's errant time management - and the officials' adding 1 second to the game clock after it hit 0:00. Vinatieri's 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Indy a 13-6 halftime lead.

Hilton provided the spark in the second half, too.

Luck took the Colts on a 15-play, 87-yard drive to open the second half with his steady, methodical play, finally hooking up with Hilton in the back of the end zone for an 8-yard score that made it 20-6.

All the Bills could get in the second half was Fitzpatrick's TD pass.

Wild Birds Unlimited: The family tree of all birds

Gavin Thomas (Sheffield) and Cody Shrank (Yale

A Yale-led scientific team has produced the most comprehensive family tree for birds connecting all living bird species and revealing surprising new details about their evolutionary history and its geographic context.

The researchers relied heavily on fossil and DNA data, combining them with geographical information to produce the exhaustive family tree, which includes 9,993 species known to be alive now. Analysis of the family tree shows when and where birds diversified ? and that birds? diversification rate has increased over the last 50 million years, challenging the conventional wisdom of biodiversity experts.

??The current zeitgeist in biodiversity science is that the world can fill up quickly,? says biologist and co-author Arne Mooers of Simon Fraser University in Canada. ?A new distinctive group, like bumblebees or tunafish, first evolves, and, if conditions are right, it quickly radiates to produce a large number of species.?These species fill up all the available niches, and then there is nowhere to go. Extinction catches up, and things begin to slow down or stall.?For birds the pattern is the opposite: Speciation is actually speeding up, not slowing down.??

The researchers attribute the growing rate of avian diversity to an abundance of group-specific adaptations. They hypothesize that the evolution of physical or behavioral innovations in certain groups, combined with the opening of new habitats, has enabled repeated bursts of diversification. Another likely factor has been birds? exceptional mobility, researchers said, which time and again has allowed them to colonize new regions and exploit novel ecological opportunities.

Bomb hits Pakistani Shiite procession, kills 5

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? A bombing claimed by the Taliban killed at least five people and wounded some 90 others at a Shiite religious procession in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, police said, as the minority Muslim sect observes the annual Ashoura holiday.

At least 30 have now died in five attacks on Shiites claimed by the Pakistani Taliban over the past five days, while about 100 were wounded in the run up to the holiday, which commemorates the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. The schism between Sunni and Shiite Muslims dates back to that time.

Sunday's explosion went off as hundreds of Shiites were passing through the main intersection of the city of Dera Ismail Khan, area police official Abdul Sattar said. An initial investigation suggested a bomb was planted near a shop along the procession route, he added.

Several of injured are in serious condition, said local hospital official Dr. Faridullah Mahsud, adding that three members of a paramilitary unit providing security were among the injured. Mahsud confirmed the five deaths.

The Pakistani Taliban, a Sunni extremist group, frequently attacks Shiites, who they consider heretics. Ashoura ceremonies are a prime targets, since they draw large crowds that march in processions to mourn the martyred Imam Hussein.

Qais Abbas, a Shiite survivor, said the procession was in the Chogla intersection of the city when the bomb went off. One of his relatives was in critical condition, he said, but he and others were moving the wounded to other hospitals that were better equipped.

"Here we are not getting proper care for them, there are not enough doctors or medicines," he said.

The same city was hit by a similar bombing on Saturday, which killed seven and injured 30. On Wednesday night, a Taliban suicide bomber struck a Shiite Muslim procession in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near Islamabad, killing 17 people. Also Wednesday, the Taliban set off two bombs outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing one person and wounding 15 others. Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for all the attacks, with spokesman Ehasanullah Ehsan saying by telephone that the group will not relent and "looks forward to more ahead."

Authorities have deployed thousands of additional police across the country to beef up security for the holy day. Mobile phone service has been shut down in all the major cities to prevent such bombings, which officials say often use cellular phones as remote detonators.

Dubai Is Building The Biggest Mall On The Planet ... - Business Insider

The Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall currently holds the title of "world's largest shopping mall"

Nov. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Dubai?s ruler announced plans for a development boasting the world?s biggest shopping mall and gardens larger than London?s Hyde Park, as the emirate revives property projects on hold since the global financial crisis.

Emaar Properties PJSC, the United Arab Emirates? largest developer by market value, and Dubai Holding LLC will together build a district called ?Mohammed Bin Rashid City,? named after the Persian Gulf emirate?s ruler. The project near central Dubai is to include 100 hotels, residential areas and green spaces 30 percent bigger than Hyde Park, according to an e- mailed statement yesterday.

Dubai already has bragging rights to the biggest emporium by total area, Dubai Mall, which sprawls opposite the planet?s tallest skyscraper, Burj Khalifa. Between these two Emaar structures is a man-made lake where the world?s largest dancing fountain shoots water 50 stories high.

Dubai, seeking to stimulate its economy, wants to resume several projects that halted after the global credit crunch drove down property values by 65 percent and caused companies to suspend construction of hundreds of developments. Builders in the U.A.E. have aborted about $757 billion of projects since the crisis, Citigroup said in a report on Oct. 16. Dubai is the country?s second-largest emirate, after Abu Dhabi.

Desert Venice

Meydan City Corp., which built a 60,000-seat horse-racing stadium and hotel complex in Dubai, said in October it would revive plans for two developments, one with low-rise buildings and lagoons and the other for a tower with ?sky gardens? and nine swimming pools. At about the same time, the emirate?s government re-approved construction of a mile-long (1.6 kilometer-long) canal from the Business Bay commercial area to the ocean.

New projects announced in the past two months include a replica of India?s Taj Mahal that would be four times the size of the original.

Emaar?s shares climbed 2.2 percent today to 3.73 dirhams, the highest close since Oct. 23. The company?s shares have jumped 45 percent this year.

?The current facilities available in Dubai need to be scaled up in line with the future ambitions for the city,? Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum said, according to the official statement. ?We have to start work immediately? on the project and boost the economy, he said.

Sheikh?s Vision

Under the ruler?s plan, Mohammed Bin Rashid City would span 5.1 square kilometres (2 square miles) and contain the biggest cluster of art galleries in the Middle East and North Africa. It?s so-called ?Mall of the World? would cater to 80 million shoppers a year.

The announcement didn?t specify the development?s expected cost or a construction schedule.

Dubai racked up $113 billion of debt transforming itself into a tourism and commercial hub. The emirate has $7 billion of debt maturating next year and $32 billion in 2014, according to a Bank of America Merrill Lynch report Oct. 20.

A construction boom in the emirate, where developers began selling property to foreigners in 2002, led to several large projects including the world?s tallest tower and man-made islands off the coast. Work on two of three palm-shaped residential islands was interrupted as the bonanza turned to a bust in the third quarter of 2008.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO, or ?search engine optimization?, means setting up your website so that it is as high as possible in the search engine rankings. There are many paid services just for increasing SEO. You may have been told by people that effective SEO is complicated and should be left to the professionals. Pay no attention to that.

One of the first questions to ask is how many years of experience they have in SEO. You will want to find out what risks are involved in order to make the best decisions for your site.

Configure your server such that it differentiates capital and lowercase letters in URLs. Not checking this can end up in less traffic to your site.

Focus on mastering one SEO strategy at a time. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Many believe that keywords in their comment tags will create a more visible site. You should focus on the things you post on your site.

If you are looking to increase your site?s visibility, you need to make sure that you sign up for free local listing through Google and Yahoo. These services get your site noticed, which means more people will visit your site. Do not turn down free publicity.

Do not create pages full of links. Instead, incorporate the links into your page content, so there is a blending of both links and pertinent material for your readers. Link pages are boring to your readers and are not ranked highly by the search engines. You will appear to know what you are doing if all of your information is relevant.

When you optimize a web page using keywords, you should focus on a single phrase that will attract traffic. Stuffing a page with more than one keyword tends to lead to confusion. The better your content, the more interested your readers will be. Search engine optimization is important but a establishing a core group of readers will benefit your business in great ways.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. It will be easier to draw new readers into your site. Place a keyword in the title, in the summary, and include it in the body about four to five times.

If you upgrade your website often, you will get more attention from search engine spiders. The better the content you provide, the more likely it is to be shared on other websites, providing you backlinks and increased traffic. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. People like hearing from the big guy himself.

Social media sites can serve as great marketing tools to promote your business. YouTube is great for videos, while Facebook and Twitter allow direct interaction.

If you utilize audio or video as part of your website?s content mix, consider including transcripts as part of the post. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Though SEO does have layers of complexity that are best reserved for professionals, there is no reason to believe that beginners cannot also use this tool to their advantage. Instead of wasting time and money hiring someone else, learn a few simple tips to get your website to the top of the search engines? listings. It may be even easier than you imagined!

Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II sneakily goes up for sale at Verizon

Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II sneakily goes up for sale at Verizon

When a carrier says it will ship a phone in the "coming weeks," there's usually a certain ritual involved: after weeks of waiting, we get a more definitive press release nailing down the ship date and price. Verizon isn't big on tradition, it seems. Just as many Americans settled down for Thanksgiving, the Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II popped up for sale at Verizon's web store. The Android QWERTY slider is selling at its promised $130 contract price and costs $450 up front; about the only surprise left for the mid-range messaging phone is out-of-the-box Isis support for NFC-based mobile payments. There's talk at Android Central of customers who've already managed to snag the Stratosphere II at retail, although the timing is such that most Americans won't see one first-hand until they're recovering from a food coma.
