Reminder: The event begins at 6:30 pm tonight at the Emporia Granada Theatre in downtown Emporia.
The Lyon County Historical Society is working on a fundraising drive and a ?surprise birthday bash? to mark its Diamond Jubilee.
The surprise party will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in the Granada Theatre.
Cake and ice cream will be provided before a movie is shown.
The movie, said LCHS Executive Director Greg Jordan, is the ?surprise? segment of the party.
?We tried to figure out what kind of movie we can show and then we thought, well, we need a hook, so it?s a surprise movie,? he said. ?But it definitely will be family-friendly.?
The event will be the first in a series planned to celebrate the first 75 years of the historical society, which actually will mark its anniversary on Nov. 1, he said.
Money raised will be used to finance the society?s educational programs, workshops and exhibits, according to the group?s newsletter, and to keep the party going into the summer.
?The idea is to pay for the other 75th anniversary experiences, if you will, and also just kind of a general operating push,? Jordan said. ?But mostly for the continued 75th anniversary extravaganza.?
Plans so far include changing out exhibits, 1870s-style baseball games, and a holiday tour.
?We?re going to do more than that, but those are just examples,? he said.
Those who attend the birthday bash may register to win what is termed a ?spectacular gift basket? and also win prizes during a Lyon County Trivia game competition.
The event is open to the public at no charge.
The theme of the fundraising drive ? Diamond Jubilee ? links to the historical society?s 75 years of existence.
?The LCHS board of directors is asking individuals, families, businesses and organizations if they would make a $750 gift ($10 for each of its 75 years) to the LCHS,? the group?s newsletter states.
Names of those who donate $750 will be placed on a permanent 75th Anniversary Wall of Honor in the atrium of the museum, 118 E. Sixth Ave. Donors may choose the name they wish to have placed on the wall.
While larger donations for the Wall of Honor are being solicited, Jordan said that donations of any size to the historical society would be welcome.
?Every dollar that we raise is a dollar that we didn?t have before,? he said.
According to information from LCHS, approximately 17,000 people participated in the group?s programs, including 6,500 children and about 1,200 people who used the site?s research center.
