Nuclear plan rejected by council

Plans to look for a site for a ?12bn underground nuclear waste store in Cumbria have been rejected.

Cumbria County Council vetoed an advanced "stage four" search for a site for the radioactive waste facility.

The stage included detailed geological investigations and discussions over the social and economic implications.

The Department for Energy and Climate Change said it was "disappointed" but the no vote would not "undermine" the long-term disposal of nuclear waste.

There were huge cheers from environmental campaigners outside the council chamber in Carlisle when the decision was announced.

The 10 members of the county council's cabinet voted seven to three against continuing with the plans.

'Uncertainty and worry'

The decision effectively ends Cumbria County Council's four-year formal involvement in the process to find an underground repository for high-level nuclear waste.

Analysis

The Cumbria decision is a blow to the government's plans to expand nuclear power.

Most experts consider nuclear energy essential for the UK's commitments on climate change.

But the UK is not allowed to export nuclear waste, so clearly it will have to be stored somewhere under British soil. The question is where?

Cumbria was the only county council still considering hosting an underground waste dump.

Now the government has either to persuade another council to risk the wrath of its citizens and invite in the diggers, or to hope that Cumbria can be induced to change its mind with more cash and more commitments on medium-term storage at Sellafield.

Even if Cumbria does agree later, a safe geological store has to be found there - which is by no means guaranteed.

Without firm plans for long-term storage for waste, the nuclear new-build programme will attract more criticism year on year.

Council leader Eddie Martin said: "Cabinet believes there is sufficient doubt around the suitability of West Cumbria's geology to put an end now to the uncertainty and worry this is causing for our communities.

"Cumbria is not the best place geologically in the UK and the government's efforts need to be focused on disposing of the waste underground in the safest place, not the easiest.

"Members have remained concerned throughout on the issue of the legal right of withdrawal if we proceed to the next stage.

"Cumbria has a unique and world-renowned landscape which needs to be cherished and protected. While Sellafield and the Lake District have co-existed side by side successfully for decades, we fear that if the area becomes known in the national conscience as the place where nuclear waste is stored underground, the Lake District's reputation may not be so resilient."

Earlier the authority ruled out Allerdale Borough Council's own vote on the issue, whilst Copeland Borough Council had voted in favour.

Dr Ruth Balogh, nuclear issues campaigner for West Cumbria and North Lakes Friends of the Earth, said she was "absolutely delighted".

"Our representatives have truly represented the communities of west Cumbria and voted against this option," she said.

"The problems of nuclear waste and where to put it is a UK problem and should not be pushed onto the people of Cumbria."

'Go it alone'

Leaders of Copeland Borough Council had voted six to one in favour of moving to the next stage, but could only proceed if the county council also agreed.

However, Copeland council leader Elaine Woodburn said the authority would be writing to the government confirming its willingness to "go it alone" and seek out a suitable underground site.

Ed Davey, Secretary for Energy and Climate Change, said: "While the decision to withdraw is disappointing, Cumbria will continue to play a central role in the energy and nuclear power sectors.

Eddie Martin, Cumbria County Council: "Would anyone come to Cumbria if you were even thinking of building a nuclear waste storage facility here?"

"We are clear that nuclear power should play a key role in our future energy mix, as it does today.

"I am confident that the programme to manage radioactive waste safely will ultimately be successful, and that the decisions made in Cumbria will not undermine prospects for new nuclear power stations.

"It is however absolutely vital that we get to grips with our national nuclear legacy. The issue has been kicked into the long-grass for far too long.

"We remain firmly committed to geological disposal as the right policy for the long-term, safe and secure management of radioactive waste."

When asked about the company's recent struggles RIM's European managing director dodges the question over and over and over and over and over again, refusing to identify any impact that Apple's iPhone had on BlackBerry.

The video of Stephen Bates' interview on the BBC's 'One Breakfast' can be found here, available to UK residents. In case you can't view either of those here's a bad quality version on YouTube.

Miami New Times' Releases Images Of Mentions Of Washington Nationals' Starter Gio Gonzalez In Notebooks Of Alleged PED Supplier

Washington Nationals' left-hander Gio Gonzalez's name is mentioned five times in the notebooks of alleged PED supplier Tony Bosch, whose clinic "Biogenesis" is the subject of a Miami New Times' investigation. The Miami New Times released images from Mr. Bosch's notebooks this afternoon.

According to a Miami New Times' report released on Tuesday, Gio Gonzalez's name was mentioned, alongside those of several other major league players, in the notebooks of Anthony Bosch, a 49-year-old "clinic chief" at a Florida-based anti-aging company called, "Biogenesis." The clinic is believed to have been, "... selling performance-enhancing drugs, from human growth hormone (HGH) to testosterone to anabolic steroids," before, following a previously established pattern detailed in the Miami New Times' report, "... it closed last month and its owner abruptly disappeared."

? LINK: "The Gio Gonzalez Files: Every Mention of The Nationals Pitcher in Tony Bosch's Notebooks" - Miami New Times - Riptide 2.0

An employee of the company provided what is described in the report as "an extraordinary batch of records" to the New Times, including the personal notebooks believed to belong to Mr. Bosch. According to the Miami New Times' report, they conducted, "Interviews with six customers and two former employees," who corroborated, "the tale told by the patient files, the payment records, and the handwritten notebooks kept by the clinic's chief."

The Nationals' left-hander was one of nine pro athletes named in the article, though its author, Tim Elfrink, noted that Gonzalez's was a "curious case":

"There's also the curious case of Gio Gonzalez, the 27-year-old, Hialeah-native, left-handed hurler who won 21 games last year for the Washington Nationals. Gonzalez's name appears five times in Bosch's notebooks, including a specific note in the 2012 book reading, "Order 1.c.1 with Zinc/MIC/... and Aminorip. For Gio and charge $1,000." (Aminorip is a muscle-building protein.)

Gonzalez's father, Max, also appears on Bosch's client lists and is often listed in conjunction with the pitcher. But reached by phone, the Hialeah resident insists his son has had no contact with Bosch.

"My son works very, very hard, and he's as clean as apple pie," the elder Gonzalez says. "I went to Tony because I needed to lose weight. A friend recommended him, and he did great work for me. But that's it. He never met my son. Never. And if I knew he was doing these things with steroids, do you think I'd be dumb enough to go there?"

As several sources noted, none of the items mentioned in connection to the Nats' starter in yesterday's article were on MLB's banned substance list. Gio Gonzalez, through his his personal (verified) Twitter account @GioGonzalez47) released a statement disputing the information in the report and claiming he'd never met with Mr. Bosch :

Nationals' GM Mike Rizzo released a statement last night which read simply, "The issue is currently being reviewed by Major League Baseball and it would be inappropriate for the Nationals to comment until that review is completed." Major League Baseball released a statement shortly after the Miami New Times' article was published which said that they were investigating the claims made in the report:

"We are always extremely disappointed to learn of potential links between players and the use of performance-enhancing substances. These developments, however, provide evidence of the comprehensive nature of our anti-drug efforts. Through our Department of Investigations, we have been actively involved in the issues in South Florida. It is also important to note that three of the players allegedly involved have already been disciplined under the Joint Drug Program..."

Gonzalez has never failed a drug test. His name is mentioned five times in Mr. Bosch's notes according to a follow-up article this afternoon entitled, "The Gio Gonzalez Files: Every Mention Of The Nationals Pitcher in Tony Bosch's Notebook." You can now see photos of the actual notes which have been posted at the Miami New Times, which posted all of the mentions of Alex Rodriguez in the notebooks yesterday. The first image has Gonzalez's name mentioned alongside Texas Rangers' slugger Nelson Cruz and Toronto Blue Jays' outfielder Melky Cabrera, who was suspended for 50 games last year after he tested positive for testosterone.

In the second Gonzalez's name appears along with his father's. The third image, dated 2/20, shows Gonzalez's name and a comparison of two rows of stats next to a what is said in the article to be a formula for "pink cream" which Yahoo!Sports.com's Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) noted on Twitter this afternoon, is, "a synthetic testosterone."

The final entry in the notebook refers again to Gonzalez's father.

Reports this afternoon by both The Washington Post's James Wagner and The Washington Times' Amanda Comak are now noting the Nationals' starter's connection to, "Jimmy Goins, the strength and conditioning coach for the [Miami] Hurricanes baseball team for the past nine seasons," who was mentioned in Tuesday's Miami New Times' report as well:

"Goins is recorded in multiple client lists; in one detailed page dated December 14, 2011, Bosch writes he's selling him Anavar, testosterone, and a Winstrol/B-12 mix and charging him $400 a month. Another, from this past December, includes sales of HGH and testosterone."

Gonzalez posted a photo of himself with Mr. Goins earlier this winter via Instagram, writing that Goins was his, "offseason strength coach." Mr. Goins, through his attorney, denied any wrongdoing or connection to the clinic as reported in a Florida Sun Sentinel article by Michael Casagrande:

"He hasn't done anything wrong either personally or as a representative of the University of Miami," said Fenderson, an attorney specializing in DUI defense with offices in Jacksonville and Coral Gables. "And as far as being on a client list of a certain doctor, any connection of the University of Miami or their baseball program would be purely coincidental."

Neither Gonzalez, the Nationals or Major League Baseball have made any further statements today.

You can view the images alleged to be from Mr. Bosch's notebooks below:

Male dancers signal their strength to men and women

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Heterosexual men pick up clues about other men's physical qualities from their dance moves just as heterosexual women do, say researchers at Northumbria University.

A study, led by psychologist Dr Nick Neave and researcher Kristofor McCarty, used 3D motion-capture technology and biomechanical analyses to examine the extent to which male dancing provides clues about the dancer's physical strength and fitness to both male and female observers.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Human Biology, suggest that male observers pick up on the strength of their potential rivals for female mates.

Researchers at Northumbria's School of Life Sciences filmed 30 males, aged 19-37, as they danced to a basic drum rhythm. Participants also completed a fitness test and assessments of upper and lower body strength. The dance clips were converted into virtual humanoid characters (avatars) and rated by women and men on perceived dance and physical qualities. The ratings were then correlated with various biomechanical indices.

The results showed that both sexes found significant positive associations between an individual's hand grip strength and their perceived dance quality, these qualities were picked up by the size and vigour of the movements of the upper body and arms.

Although it is traditionally thought that signals given off by men when they dance have been designed -- like animal mating displays -- to be interpreted as clues of their physical attributes to the opposite sex, it seems that heterosexual men are also making use of these signals, presumably to detect a potential love rival.

Dr Nick Neave believes that this increased sensitivity to male qualities by other heterosexual men may be due to intrasexual rivalry -- men sizing up the strength and virility of their competition.

He said: "Rated dance quality was positively associated with actual grip strength and these clues of upper-body strength were most accurately picked up by male observers. This ability to discern upper-body strength is principally because men are looking for cues of 'formidability' in other males.

"Upper-body strength is highly related to fighting ability as it reflects the ability to do damage, especially in intra-sexual conflicts. The ability to gauge strength before potential conflicts is sensible, especially to other males."

Also part of the research team were Northumbria University academics Dr Nick Caplan and Johannes H?nekopp, with Bernard Fink, from the Institute of Zoology and Anthropology, University of G?ttingen, Germany.

The study, "Male body movements as possible cues to physical strength: a biomechanical analysis", is published online in this month's American Journal of Human Biology

'Objectify a Male Tech Writer Day' gets canned | Crave - CNET

Seth Rosenblatt canceled

Sorry, folks, February 1 is just another regular day.

(Credit: Josh Miller/CNET)

If you've been spending the last few days thinking up adjectives to use on Objectify a Male Tech Writer Day, you'll have to save "dreamy," "hunky," "handsome," and "hot" for another occasion. Leigh Alexander, the writer who first proposed the special day for February 1, has called an official halt to the festivities before they can begin.

Alexander's original idea was to make February 1 a day when people sharing articles written by male tech writers would add an extra comment about the writer's appearance. This was in response to ongoing issues she has encountered with people making comments about her appearance, something she feels few male tech writers have to deal with.

It was all supposed to be lighthearted and humorous, but Alexander received feedback that sparked concern about the day going in negative directions it wasn't intended to take.

Writing in the New Statesman, Alexander explains the cancellation. "#Objectify is not about celebrating objectification or about making people feel uncomfortable, but I'm increasingly worried that point will be lost and that harm can be done," she says.

Alexander's idea has already sparked a good amount of discussion about the issues it was designed to highlight. Comments flew fast and furious in articles and on the day's (now deleted) Facebook page.

Some readers supported the idea. "As a male, it's embarrassing to me when a discussion devolves from being about technology to being about a woman's physical assets," wrote reader bhartman35 in the comments on CNET's article. Others weren't so enthusiastic. "Sounds more like you're trying to even the score than prevent anything or educate anyone," wrote reader jlongino.

Objectification of female tech writers has flown under the radar for a long time. That we are talking about these issues means Objectify a Male Tech Writer Day has already served its purpose, without even becoming official.

'Tweet seats' play a role at the theater

NBC News' Willie Geist reports on the cell phone's role for "Rock Center."

By Erika Niedowski, The Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ??Sarah Bertness slipped into her seat at a recent staging of the musical "Million Dollar Quartet" and, when the lights dimmed, started doing something that's long been taboo inside theaters: typing away at her iPhone.

The 26-year-old freelance writer from Providence wasn't being rude. She had a spot in the "tweet seat" section at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

The theater is now setting aside a small number of seats ? in the back ? for those who promise to live-tweet from the performance using a special hashtag. They might offer impressions of the set, music or costumes, lines of dialogue that resonate with them ... or anything else that strikes them, really.

At "Million Dollar Quartet," based on the true story of a 1956 recording session that united music greats Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, PPAC for the first time had cast members tweeting from backstage, too.

Smartphone on stage
A growing number of theaters, including some on Broadway, have been experimenting in recent years with tweet seats and other real-time uses of social media as they try to figure out the relationship between the stage and the smartphone.

Some insist the theater should remain a sacred, technology-free place and that allowing the use of phones during a show ? even discreetly ? only serves as a potential distraction for other patrons. But others say theaters can't afford not to engage the digital generation, and that the way performances were once enjoyed, in a vacuum, doesn't hold up anymore.

{{percent}}%

({{numVotes}} votes)

{{/data.answerData}}

"I think that it's important that PPAC and cultural institutions in general kind of jump on the social media bandwagon and learn to engage a broader audience," said Bertness, who runs the blog The Rhode Islander and is such a big Johnny Cash fan that she showed up to the performance wearing all black. "I think it's such a valuable tool."

Scott Moreau, an understudy for Johnny Cash, hadn't ever tweeted from backstage during a performance. He tried to provide a glimpse of what life's like on the tour, which he likened to the special features on a DVD. He said he enjoyed getting instant feedback from the tweeters ? feedback he shared with other cast members.

"It makes it feel a lot more personal," Moreau said.

A picture of Moreau that was tweeted out from backstage ? he was tweeting in it himself ? prompted someone in the tweet seats to declare that's what the Man in Black would have looked like, with an iPhone.

Time for 'Twittermission'?
Other theaters are also trying different digital ways to engage with patrons. In Boston, the Huntington Theater plans to introduce a "Twittermission" where an artist affiliated with the production, or someone from the theater's staff, answers questions about the show on Twitter during intermissions. The tweets will also be projected on screens in the theater lobby, according to spokeswoman Rebecca Curtiss.

The theater won't be introducing tweet seats, though.

"We feel strongly that the experience that an audience member has in our theater should be limited to what they are seeing on the stage," Curtiss said. "When the lights go down and the show begins, we want the art on stage to speak for itself."

PPAC isn't sure yet whether any social media buzz generated by those in the tweet seats will have a measurable effect at the box office. But spokeswoman P.J. Prokop said the theater intends to keep the program through the end of the year, and then evaluate it. Those who sit in the tweet seats get their tickets for free.

Kirsten DiChiappari, who has tweeted three shows there to her nearly 1,400 followers, grew up in New Jersey going to Broadway musicals, plays and the opera. The 41-year-old social media consultant from Bristol sees her live-tweeting as a way to lure people from their living rooms, where many are glued to "horrible reality television."

"It's kind of a way to tease people back to support the live arts, the real arts, the original arts," she said. "I feel like once they go, they'll go again."

Leftist wins first direct Czech presidential vote

Petr Josek / REUTERS

Winning presidential candidate Milos Zeman is seen on a giant television screen displayed in front of Prague Castle on Saturday.

By Jan Lopatka, Reuters

PRAGUE - Leftist former prime minister Milos Zeman won the Czech Republic's first direct presidential election on Saturday, beating a conservative opponent he had accused of favoring foreign interests in a bitter campaign.

Zeman, a 68-year-old who favors more integration within the European Union, won by 54.8 to 45.2 percent over Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg, results from 99.9 percent of voting districts showed.

Economic forecaster Zeman, a Communist Party member before the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, will steer Czechs closer to Europe's mainstream.

The anti-EU rhetoric of outgoing President Vaclav Klaus, who succeeded late playwright Vaclav Havel, has pushed the country toward the margins of the 27-member bloc.

Czech presidents do not wield much day-to-day power but represent the country abroad and appoint prime ministers, central bankers and judges.

Zeman said he wants to overcome divisions provoked by the election in the central European country of 10.5 million people. The final stage of the campaign was marked by doubts cast on the national loyalties of Schwarzenberg, a prince from a centuries-old aristocratic family who lived much of his life in Austria.

Zeman promised to tackle graft, an issue which has dominated political debate for years.

"I want to be president of the bottom 10 million. These include voters of Milos Zeman as well as Karel Schwarzenberg. I do not want to be president of mafias that act as parasites on this society," Zeman said.

Zeman served as Social Democrat prime minister in 1998-2002 under a power-sharing deal with Klaus's right-wing party that critics saw as a breeding ground for corruption.

Schwarzenberg conceded defeat and congratulated Zeman, but relations between the center-right cabinet and new president may be strained.

Zeman, who has a folksy manner and a well-advertised appetite for sausages and alcohol, appeals to poorer and rural voters, unlike the government, which has raised taxes, cut social benefits and suffered several corruption scandals.

During his premiership, Zeman was credited with privatizing the main banks and attracting foreign investment. Opponents criticize his friendship with former communist officials and businessmen with links to Russia.

Previously, Czech presidents were elected by parliamentary votes that involved a lot of back-room dealing, which led to popular demand for a constitutional change approved last year.

Ghosts of the past
The finale of the campaign was marked by appeals to nationalism, unusual for the Czech Republic, whose biggest trading partner is Germany.

Zeman accused Schwarzenberg of backing the cause of some three million ethnic Germans, known as Sudeten Germans, who were expelled from then-Czechoslovakia after World War Two.

Schwarzenberg has said that in today's world, the expulsion could be seen as a war crime, but denied allegations he would open the door for demands to return confiscated property.

Klaus backed Zeman in the vote, saying he wanted a president who had lived in the country all his life, unlike Schwarzenberg, whose family has large land holdings in Austria where he lived in exile during the 1948-1989 communist rule.

Schwarzenberg said the election was won by lies.

"The difference of 10 percentage points was the result of this kind of campaign," he said. "It is impossible to defend against certain type of bad-mouthing."

The Week In Arts And Culture: Slavery Controversy, Bodybuilding Shots And Graffiti Churches (PHOTOS)

This week, there was a lot of talk about Kara Walker's recently reinstated drawing at the Newark Public Library.

"The library should be a safe harbor for controversies of all types, and those controversies can be dealt with in the context of what is known about art, about literature, democracy and freedom," library trustee Clement A. Price, a Rutgers university history professor, told the AP. "There's no better venue in Newark where such a powerful and potential controversial drawing should be mounted."

On Thursday, we were entranced by Brian Finke's photo series on pumped up forms.

Simply titled "Bodybuilding," the collection of photographs highlights an array of individuals who push their bodies to unfathomable extremes. The 2005 series features women and men of all ages, exploring -- lightheartedly and seemingly without judgment -- a realm where obsessions with appearance and uniformity far exceed societal norms.

Now, we can certainly appreciate the beauty in the classical aesthetic that so often characterizes sites of religious observance. But sometimes even traditional venues need a radical makeover.

Graffiti artist Hense did just that to a former church in Washington D.C.'s up-and-coming arts district. The artist got to work with the help of a small crew, using rollers, brushes, spray paint, inks, acrylics, mops, enamels and paint sprayers to cover every inch of the edifice in popping hues. After several weeks, the white church was transformed into a rainbow splattered objet d'art.

Stan Musial remembered during funeral Mass

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Stan Musial was remembered during a funeral and memorial outside Busch Stadium on Saturday as a Hall of Famer and a St. Louis icon embraced by generations of fans who never had the privilege of watching him play.

Broadcaster Bob Costas, his voice cracking with emotion at times, pointed out during a two-hour Mass that in 92 years of life, Stan the Man never let anyone down.

Costas noted that even though Musial, who died Jan. 19, was a three-time NL MVP and seven-time batting champion, the pride of Donora, Pa., lacked a singular achievement. Joe DiMaggio had a 56-game hitting streak, Ted Williams was the last major leaguer to hit .400, and Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle soared to stardom in the New York spotlight. Musial didn't quite reach the 500-homer club ? he finished with 475 ? and played in his final World Series in 1946, "wouldn't you know it, the year before they started televising the Fall Classic!"

"What was the hook with Stan Musial other than the distinctive stance and the role of one of baseball's best hitters?" Costas said. "It seems that all Stan had going for him was more than two decades of sustained excellence as a ballplayer and more than nine decades as a thoroughly decent human being.

"Where is the single person to truthfully say a bad word about him?"

There was enough room in the large Roman Catholic church for a handful of fans. One of them wore a vintage, No. 6 Musial jersey. Another clapped softly as pallbearers carried the casket from the church to the hearse to the tune of bagpipes.

Among those in attendance were baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, former St. Louis standout Albert Pujols and Hall of Famers Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Ozzie Smith, Bruce Sutter, Whitey Herzog and 90-year-old Red Schoendienst, who once roomed with Musial. Joe Torre, a former MVP and manager in St. Louis, and Tony La Russa, who became close with Musial during his 16 seasons managing the Cardinals, sat near the front along with current manager Mike Matheny.

Pujols, who had been on track to challenge many of Musial's franchise records before signing with the Angels 13 months ago, exchanged hugs with Fred Hanser, a member of the Cardinals ownership team, before taking his seat.

Jim Edmonds, a star center fielder for two World Series teams in the 2000s, has the same last name as one of Musial's sons-in-law. He said Musial informed him that they were distant relatives, and greeted him as "Hey, Cuz!"

"I thought he was kidding at first," Edmonds said. "That's pretty cool."

Jack Clark, a slugging first baseman for the Cardinals during the 1980s, said he perhaps respected Musial most for his decency during baseball's sometimes difficult period of integration in the 1940s and 1950s.

"Stan kind of crossed that color barrier. When people were getting on the African-American players, he stuck up for them. It was a time when you could kind of get your finger pointed at you for that stuff," Clark said. "People loved him, and he loved them right back."

Bishop Richard Stika, pastor at Musial's' church in suburban St. Louis for several years, speculated during the homily about why Musial was never ejected from a game during his career: "I think deep down, that was because he didn't want to go home and face Lil."

Musial's wife of nearly 72 years, Lillian, died last year.

Grandson Andrew Edmonds said the public Musial was no different from the private Musial, the grandpa who bought McDonalds for the family every Sunday. He recalled a fan telling him, "Your grandpa's best attribute is he made nobodies feel like somebodies."

Pallbearers included Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III, Musial grandsons Andrew Edmonds and Brian Schwarze, and the retired star's longtime business partner in Stan the Man Inc., Dick Zitzmann.

After the service, the hearse and vans filled with the Cardinals' delegation drove to Busch Stadium, where Musial's family laid flowers at the base of one of his statues ? the one that made the move across the street from the old Busch ? while being serenaded by "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Color guards from the city's fire and police departments flanked the statue, along with more than a dozen ballpark ushers. A single Clydesdale walked slowly down the street.

Cardinals closer Jason Motte shook his head.

"This is nothing like I've ever seen," he said.

During a funeral that was almost entirely upbeat, son-in-law Martin Schwarze got the biggest laugh when he recounted a 1995 radio interview with Jack Buck during which Musial was asked how good of a hitter he'd have been had he played in the modern era. Musial, who finished with a .331 career batting average, replied he probably would have batted about .275, and Buck said "Whoa, whoa, whoa," that's way too low.

Then Musial added with a chuckle, "Hey, Jack, I'm 75!"

Thousands filed through the Cathedral Basilica at Musial's six-hour public visitation on Thursday, and hundreds more attended the service.

Hundreds more were waiting at the more prominent of the two Musial statues outside Busch Stadium, where fans have gathered since Musial died after several years of declining health. Next to the statues were flowers, balloons, teddy bears, helmets, autographed items and a homemade sign that read "Thanks for the memories. You live in our hearts, No. 6."

"He's been a hero to us for four generations," Kathy Noorman of Wentzville, Mo., said, speaking near the statue. "He was such a good man, somebody you can hold up to grandkids and your own kids as an example of who they should be."

Mark Springman, 57, of Alton, Ill., brought a bottle of champagne to the statue shrine. He saw Musial play in 1963, Stan the Man's final season, and has been a season-ticket holder for about 15 years.

"He was more than a ballplayer," Springman said. "He was the man."

School system favors pupils driven by worry and conscientiousness

School system favors pupils driven by worry and conscientiousness [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 24-Jan-2013

In one of three studies, Pia Rosander carried out personality tests on 200 pupils in southern Sweden when they entered upper secondary school at 16. Three years later, when they received their final grades, she was able to observe a strong link between personality and grades.

In personality psychology one talks of "the big five" the five most common personality traits: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. These qualities influence how a person behaves and are relatively stable qualities, which means that they do not change greatly over time or in different situations.

One of the traits is clearly associated with high grades: conscientiousness. Neuroticism, where pupils are driven by fear and worry, also led to high grades. Contrary to Pia Rosander's hypothesis, openness, or intellectual curiosity, did not lead to high grades.

"We have a school system in Sweden that favours conscientious and fear-driven pupils", says Pia Rosander. "It is not good for psychological well-being in the long term if fear is a driving force. It also prevents in-depth learning, which happens best among the open personality types who are driven by curiosity."

Today's school system therefore favours girls who are eager to please. Boys are more likely to have the personality types that area driven by interest and curiosity and do not benefit from the Swedish system of grades. For the girls, there was a link between high IQ and conscientiousness. Surprisingly, for boys, the opposite was the case the conscientious boys often had a lower IQ than those who were less conscientious.

"Greater conscientiousness, i.e. getting things done, arriving on time, etc. may be a way for boys to compensate for a lower IQ", says Pia Rosander, who thinks her results should make teachers reflect on the grounds used to set grades.

Other surprising results from the study are that introverted personality types get higher grades than extroverted types. Pia Rosander assumes this is because extroverted personality types have so many other things to focus on that they have difficulty making time for school work.

"My studies clearly show that the school system needs to be more individualised", says Pia Rosander. "How else can we support talented pupils with the 'wrong' personality type, those we call under-performers, who are capable but lack the ability to plan their school work, for example?"

In Pia Rosander's view, school teachers must realise that personality is something that neither pupils nor teachers and parents can influence. She believes that telling careless pupils off and instructing them to get their act together doesn't help. Instead, such pupils must be given help with structure and study techniques.

    ###

Pia Rosander, a lecturer at Kristianstad University, will defend her thesis at Lund University on Friday, 25 January. The thesis is entitled The importance of personality; IQ and learning approaches: Predicting academic performance. She has also published her research in the following international journals:

Rosander, P., Bckstrm, M. & Stenberg, G. (2011). Personality traits and general intelligence as predictors of academic performance: A structural equation modeling approach. Learning and Individual Differences, 21, 590-596.
