A record-breaking 264 dogs, cats and rabbits were adopted or placed in just five hours during Irvine Animal Care Center's Home for the Holidays pet adoption fair earlier this month, the city announced Thursday.
The Irvine shelter saved another 117 pets that were at risk of being euthanized through its Third Chance for Pets program, bringing the total to 381 pets saved.

About 37 of the third-chance pets will be flown to facilities in New York and Canada by the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, which saves animals at risk to be euthanized by transferring them to homes or adoption-only facilities throughout North America.
"We are fortunate to have space at the center to house these adoptable dogs and cats until transportation can be arranged to take them to their new homes," said Irvine shelter administrator Ron R. Edwards. "We have worked with the Heigl Foundation on many occasions and are very happy to continue this life-saving partnership."
The shelter's Home for the Holidays event welcomed 3,000 attendees and raised more than $40,000, according to the city. Proceeds from the event will go toward caring for the thousands of homeless animals that enter the center each year.
